Wind Gap Offer Is Out

Just in from Pax Mahle. The Griffin’s Lair is $48 ($125 for the mag), and the Armagh is $36. Text of the email follows:

December 2010

Greetings from west Sonoma County,

Here they are, our first two Syrahs from 2008! Both are 100% Syrah, both are sourced from the very cold Petaluma Wind Gap and both were fermented and aged identically. The fascinating part is that the wines couldn’t be more different.

The Griffins Lair is… well it’s Griffins Lair. Rustic yet polished, concentrated and incredibly intense with its trademark savory spice that balances out all of that incredible fruit. The Armagh is going to be a new one for you, a great little site that produced a wine so singular in 2008 that we couldn’t blend these four particular barrels away. I encourage you to take advantage of securing these two limited production wines as production for the Griffins Lair is down 66% in 2008, and The Armagh is so delicious and inexpensive, it will most likely vanish rather quickly.

2008 Wind Gap Syrah, Armagh Vineyard, Sonoma Coast
The Armagh Vineyard is planted on a south-westerly facing slope in Chileno Valley, west of the town of Petaluma in one of the coldest sections of the Petaluma Wind Gap. This tiny block of vines produces a wildly sauvage-filled wine that is a vital component of our Sonoma Coast Syrah bottling. Four of the seven barrels were chosen to represent our first Vineyard-Designated Syrah from this site, while the other three were blended into the 2008 Sonoma Coast Syrah. This 97 case cuvée speaks proudly and loudly of its extreme growing conditions. Naturally low in alcohol from the cold nights and cool windy days and naturally concentrated from the tiny berries and meticulous farming, this is an excellent example of a cold climate Wind Gap wine.

Tasting Notes:
Sauvage aromas of iodine, tar, currants, leather and bittersweet chocolate reveal themselves from the opaque surface of this black wine. Nervy and fresh on entry with a concentration of fruit and tertiary flavors that scream Syrah. It is more nimble and light than it first seems as the zesty savory earth driven flavors meld w/ the ripe black and red fruits. The finish brings along some dusty tannins and savory olive notes, with a firm finish of spice and tar.

Winemaking:
100% Whole-Cluster, crushed by foot, natural fermentations, never racked, 24 months in all old multiple use French Oak barrels. Bottled without any clarification.

3.67 pH
12.7 % alc by Vol
97 Cases Bottled

Disclaimer:
This is the funky, rustic and wild side of Syrah. This isn’t a tooty-fruity, creamy oak-bomb, crowd-pleaser kind of Syrah… in fact most of the crowd will run in horror back to their Big Macs as you bravely savor the dark rustic side of Syrah…

2008 Wind Gap Syrah, Griffins Lair Vineyard, Sonoma Coast
True to the nature of this vineyard, it has bucked the trend and produced a better wine in 2008 than it did in 2007. While that would be the obvious thing for the guy selling the wine to say, truth be known we produced such a tiny amount of wine in 2008 that if it wasn’t so incredibly good, I wouldn’t waste the space in this newsletter to tell you what you already know, you are buying this wine, and regardless of what you buy, you are going to regret not buying more.

Tasting Notes:
Deep dark aromas of cured meat, tiny black currants, smoked black olives, creamy blueberries and black pepper. The wine is incredibly intense on the palate and the tiny berry expression really shines through. Tightly wound initially, this wine gains weight and texture with air. Beautifully integrated tannins give this the impression of being one of the most approachable Grifiins Syrahs we have bottled.

Winemaking:
100% Whole-Cluster, crushed by foot, natural fermentations, never racked, 24 months in all old multiple use French Oak barrels. Bottled without any clarification.

13.6% Alc By Vol
3.63 pH
116 cases bottled

Disclaimer:
A more typical California Syrah, it has riper flavors and is more concentrated than our other Sonoma Coast bottlings, while retaining that cool climate character.

Thank you for your continued support,

In for some Griffin’s - an old favorite from Pax and this should complete an interesting '08 horizontal showing the state of cold-climate CA Syrah(Griffin’s from Arnot-Roberts, Wind Gap, Donelan, throw in a Bedrock Old Lakeville from right across the street).

I’m definitely in for a few of these. The Griffin’s is always a must, but the Armagh looks tasty too. Anyone tasted these yet?

Has the shipping cost improved?

No! I am in for a case + a magnum, and got hit with a $75 shipping fee. Tough to swallow when some other well-respected wineries are not charging separately for shipping.

$18.50 to ship 3 bottles to WA - yes a bit pricey.
I may still bite on a few bottles of the Armagh Vineyard, sounds interesting.

I realize Griffins Lair is well known, but $54 is getting up there.
Doesn’t he know that nobody can sell syrah anymore?
(surely not a problem at these very small case volumes)

Can’t get any better for me. I can walk there. [stirthepothal.gif]

I am in for both. FWIW, when I visited Pax earlier this year, I tried the Griffin’s from barrel. Here is the impresson I posted when I got back from that trip:

2008 Griffin’s Lair—my notes are starred on this wine. Big fig paste, plum, and earthy dark berry, not sure what to call it but think of dark and earthy. Nectarine pit, pure and lively. Probably one of, if not the best barrel sample I had on the whole trip.

Help?..Shipping for our last two offers was completely gratis…I don’t know how we could improve upon that Russ.

This micro offer of limited releases has subsidized shipping prices…and two very fairly priced bottles of wine…

So enlighten me which is a better model?

1.) Add $8-$10 to each bottle and ship everything free?
2.) Keep prices low and ship to you for less than I am charged to ship it?

So which way is preferable for most of you…Russ? …I’m listening. I kinda like the transparency of the way I have chosen to do it…but I am all ears in regards to feedback from our customers. If it feels better to pay more and get the perceived value of free shipping I get it…I am willing to do what my paying customers want…

Mr. Tranfro thank you for your continued support…It is humbling and greatly appreciated…

Larry P.- Your tasting sounds fun…should be even more fun next year when the 2009s come out as Morgan got some Griffins too…while others didn’t.

Brian - For a guy that is so close we certainly don’t see you very often…we should change that…by the way having the support of a Forestvillian is also greatly appreciated.

Mr Diven Thank you for your continued support…I apologize the shipping price seems high…I am looking into that one…I hope we can get a few of these to you this go round…

Mr Wolfe Thank you for your generous support…I appreciate your business and am humbled by it…

Drink more Syrah!

Pax,

Amen brother . . . and while we’re at it, more Grenache too (-:

Cheers!

Pax, I don’t like your timing. I set my '10 moratorium on wine buying about a month ago!

Naturaly, I ignored it. blush

Be careful what you ask for [snort.gif]

+1
Got the Switchback Ridge pre-release email yesterday. I thought I was all done for the year [truce.gif]

Pax - all I can enlighten you on is that your shipping charges are close to 100% higher than any other winery or retailer I purchase from. As an individual I can ship wine for less. What am I missing??

Russ not sure where the picture came from but that is one happy pussy.

Hmmm…my shipping was slightly over $4/btl Ground UPS to the boonies of northern NM. Seems about right to me.
Tom

I have to chuckle at this…the most PhD enriched “boonies” in the world.

Russ - I am really sorry that you believe the words in your post and that the stars aren’t aligning for us to ship wine to you…I wish you a Happy Holiday Season. [truce.gif]

Drink more Syrah!

I do suffer from this historical perspective. As a long time SF resident, I did pickup my 06 Sonoma Coast Syrah in person (and experienced quite a memorable pickup party/tasting as well - think terrific chards and oysters). Now all my CA wine has to be shipped. I should just shutup and factor this into my otherwise greatly reduced cost of living - well my raingear costs have gone up.

The facts are:

  • had an early look at one of my 07 SC Syrahs last month, really a lovely wine and nice deal at $36
  • without condemning all WA Syrah, local wines with this balance and finesse are, lets just say rare
  • when I increased my order to 6 bottles the shipping cost was a more palatable $4.33 per
  • lets face it at 97 and 116 cases these wines could probably sell out largely in the Bay Area

So i’m in, modestly, 3 of each.

Stopped by this afternoon to pick up my wine and got to taste the Griffin’s Lair. Yum. Buy. They had an 09 Griffin’s Lair Gap’s Crown Pinot open and poured it as well. Ended up buying some of that too. Damn I’m easy.

No need to surrender, just tell me if I can buy wine from you and have it shipped to VA for $4/btl.
