I need a brush up on William Fevre Chablis as to the labeling of “DOMAINE” and sans DOMAINE. I was offered 2017 “Domaine William Fevre” MdT, and received the bottles today without “DOMAINE” on them. CT has two pics showing both. IS there still a difference in the wines/fruit/price? Are they different wines? Did I get screwed?
Thanks
Interesting. I have some of this coming from WHWC. The photos from my order show domaine bottles, but I don’t know what will show up. My understanding is that there is a difference–the non-domaine is negotiant fruit. Still tends to be very good, but not the same as the domaine bottles.
Well this thread prompted me to look at my recent bottles. GC had domaine, but when checking the 1er In came a cross this one (actually 3 bottles) Any idea what this is about ?
HaHa…and even more of a mystery…your bottle says “Domaine Baillard”??? WTF?
Good pick up, Buzz. I was aware that the have both a Domaine and a Non-Domaine bottling at their basic level. The one from their vines carries the Domaine label. The négociant bottling from other vines does not, but carries the “Champs Royaux” naming on the label to make it appear clearly different. Strange seeing what you point out on 1er, and only those with sharp eyes might notice. Hopefully the explanation is benign.
There are three basic Chablis–one is domaine, one is non-domaine, one is Champs Royaux. they also make a non-domaine Vaillons (I’ve never seen the Domaine Baillard), a non-domaine Fourchaume. I wasn’t aware of a non-domaine MdT but obviously there is one. In the distant past, I’ve had non-domaine les Clos, but i don’t know if they do this every year. Their website says nothing about all of this except the non-domaine chablis. There must be someone out there who knows more about all of this.
I just looked at these bottles of William Fevre and they all had Domaine on the label:
2017 MdT and Mont de Milieu
2018 Vaillons
2019 Vaillons and Montmains
Per Jasper Morris, there are several other non-domaine bottlings. Domaine Baillard sells off part of their production, so they must sell at least some to Fevre. I’ve seen pictures of “Domaine Baillard” Fevre bottles back to 2015 on CT.
So what would be an estimate in the difference in price between a Domaine MdT, and non Domaine MdT?
Buzz, you might get more complete info by contacting William Fevre directly. Go to their website https://www.williamfevre.fr They have an English language version of the website by clicking on the flag. Click on ‘Contact Us’ at the bottom of the page and ask your questions on the form.
Agreed here. I conducted a tasting with a number of their wines and they were very helpful in supplying specific wine making info and analyses for each wine.
FWIW I have bought recently both teh Domaine and non Domaine Chablis AC.
Update…retailer gave me credit for the mixup. Had a bottle, very nice Chablis but borderline worthy of the price I paid. More in line now with the credit received. Would really like to taste it side by with the Domaine to see if any difference. Emailed the Winery with no response.
Same mixup happened to me (same retailer). Hoping for the same outcome.
I went to go pick up a 2019 vaillons I had bought on pre arrival a few months ago yesterday and thanks to this thread, made sure to check the label. Sure enough, the label didn’t have domaine on it. They tried to tell me it was domaine until I pushed back and said they would check with their buyer.
Sounds like scope for a fascinating tasting. Would also be interesting to know if Fevre says anything about differences in wine making between the two versions and whether they aim to highlight differences in the fruit or not (I’d guess it’s a yes as they take the trouble to bottle separately).
So far it sounds more like an inattentive retailer. What the winery did is irrelevant when the goods are not what was promised.
Agreed, but had there been full disclosure, what differences would have been expected.
I’ll be checking my few bottles. Not sure where the KGBO ranks on inattention scale. I’d categorise them as anal but ignorant ![]()
Fascinating thread! I was unaware they had both.
FWIW, I’ve had the Domaine MdT, and find it very underwhelming. Not a producer on my hit list for a vineyard that I love.
I have some of this from 2017 coming from WHWC and from Envoyer, neither advertised as “Domaine”. I didn’t even think about it when I ordered, having never seen the non-comaine mdT, but suspect I will be getting non-domaine.
Just checked all the 2021’s I recently ordered and all the premier and grand crus I received say “domaine”. I didn’t even realize there was a difference until reading this thread
