In the last few months I have had 2 bottles spew wine when popping the cork? I have opened thousands of bottles and this has never happened before. The first time it shocked me and I thought I must of had the bottle tilted??? Last night when opening a bottle of Jones Sisters, it happened again!! Any ideas? Is the bottle overfilled? Both bottles were shipped direct from the winery and have been stored in the cellar from day of arrival.
It has happened to me on occasion. Pulling the cork can create a partial vacuum in the neck of the bottle, and either the wine gets pulled up somewhat, or when the cork is removed, the air rushing in causes a splash-like effect.
My guess is it happens when the cork is quickly pulled straight out, without even the slightest sideways pull, and makes that signature audible ‘pop’. It might not happen if you pull more slowly, and then just before the bottom of the cork would clear the neck, tilt the corkscrew slightly to break the partial vacuum by lifting just one edge of the cork.
That’s where I was going with this, Brian. It’s the only opener I use. I think it lets that pressure out as part of its intrinsic function. Hey, it’s almost 5:00!
I’ve had the ah-so push the cork into the bottle AND squirt more than a bit of wine all OVER the Place. I realized it’s almost always due to a dry cork and can be avoided with xtra care on the insertion and pull.
I’ve noticed an increase in corks “disintegrating” Or at least breaking apart. I tend to drink older wines, but this problem seems to be coming from younger wines, therefore newer corks.
