Why Is Ata Rangi Pinot Noir So Difficult To Find?

This New Zealand Pinot Noir has never been available locally and the few hits on winesearcher are absurdly priced. Does anyone know who imports this into the US?

lol that’s why you can’t find it. Verity is OOB and they were notorious for not paying their suppliers.

Any idea why no one has picked up Ata Rangi? It’s such good Pinot.

“Ata Rangi” is Maori for “difficult to find.”

It’s a tough sell to be honest, I don’t know if enough American consumers really appreciate the upper echelon NZ Pinot Noirs. My friend Sheila was the Southern Hemisphere portfolio manager at Verity during their heyday, pretty sure she brought them over from Martin Scott (which was bought by Winebow) it was one of her passions.

K&L direct imports it at a
Pretty similar price to NZ

For that matter, for most of the good NZ wines you need to look to K&L

And then you need to find ways to ship from K&L. Sadly, that’s not always too easy as they seem to not want to ship anywhere in the states

What are the best NZ pinots that are at least moderately available in the USA?

Clayton is spot on. I contacted the winery and they confirmed that K&L are the exclusive importer. Ata Rangi told me the 2017 is sold out and the 2018 is due in Feb/Mar 2022

From K&L website, I would recommend the following; Martinborough Vineyard Home Block, Greystone No’Wester. Greywacke, Black Estate Home Vineyard and Giesen Clayvin

Chris,

I’m not well versed, but I do trust whatever Joe Czerwinski says.

K&L kills it with NZ wines. They appear to have a NZ buyer who visits frequently and actually understands the scene.

They direct import Ata Rangi, Te Mata, Felton Road, Fromm and many other greats.

To Keith’s point good luck getting them to ship out of state. As a domaine customer I get them shipped to Domaine in Napa and onwards from there.

I would add, they also do a great job of Australia.

Rippon Pinot Noir Mature Vine (seems available in the US)

It’s definitely more widely available. The importer does a good job getting it into a variety of markets. Sadly, there just isn’t much to go around

Quick PSA: 2018 Ata Rangi is back in stock at K&L. Crimson and McCrone available as well.

I used to see Ata Rangi at Sherry-Lehman in New York, as well as some of the other NZ Pinots. Agree these are often gems.

A further PSA - K&L has '18 and '19 on clearance, $36 and $47 respectively.
