Big Table Farm makes some absolutely fantastic wines. They are good stewards of their land. They do a good job with several different grapes, and they make a good variety of price points. In our house tonight we are drinking the recently released 2018 “House Blend” Pinot and it is delicious. Incredibly Burgundian with lots of earthy goodness but good Oregon fruit to back it up. They have great customer engagement on instagram and good customer service. I haven’t gotten to visit yet, but I’ve heard the experience is very good. The only drawback is they have a farm but have not yet started to make wine from their own vines (they are planting soon as far as I can tell).
We have some really great Oregon producers on WB and even more that participate in BD, so I can see how they get lost in the mix. But if you dont know much about them, check them out!
I see BTF around town, but always wonder if I’m going to regret spending $44-50 on something thats not a SVD when folks like PGC and Goodfellow have such great options in that range.
I visited them in Spring, 2016. They are in the middle of nowhere, but not that hard to find. No million dollar tasting room, just a sign on a dirt road. When you visit the winery, you visit their home. It actually felt more like visiting friends. It was a cold morning. The wood stove was going. There are big dogs and, of course, a big table. It was the most personal of all my visits (I did more than 20 on the trip) and the most fun. I finished the last of the 14s (I bought a bunch when I was there) earlier this year. They were very good. Their style is well described by the OP. I’m not sure some of their SVDs are worth $100, but the Willamette blend is a solid choice for $40.
My only experience was with their Edelzwicker, which was underwhelming. Truthfully, though, I have never been wowed by an Edelzwicker. I saw it and wanted to try something from BTF.
To those interested, you can find many of their wines on their site and they ship to most states I believe. Free shipping on orders w/ full half case increments (i.e. 6, 12, 18, etc)
I am a big fan and typically one of my favorite visits in WV. The other favorites from from my last trip were Goodfellow, Walter Scott, Frannybeck, PGC, and vincent. Most of there SVD are in the $60 range with free shipping.
just shot them an instagram message to see about gauging interest. I cant claim to KNOW them, but I have messaged with them a moderate amount recently.
EDIT: sounds like they would be interested in talking about details with someone, I can pass along an email address if youd like?
the house blend we drank last night was $30 and was a great entry option. the basic chard is less than $30 as well i think. but i can also tell you its worth the price just like the PGC and Goodfellow are
Has anyone ever gotten a chance to try their Earth or Queen Bee bottlings? both sold out this year to allocations and I’ve never been able to track any down locally.
I have had both and while I am not a sophisticated wine consumer I found the Earth to be very special and to me worth the money. Queen Bee is a solid chardonnay and yet another example of how WV chardonnay is getting really good.
My cousin sent me a bottle of Big Table Farm 2018 because it’s his favorite winery. I hadn’t even heard of it. Popped it, and it’s a really pretty bottle of wine. A bit richer in fruit profile but with a really compelling floral note on it. This is something I’d be very glad to drink more of!
