Why Do Total Wine Coupons Suck Now??

Maybe Total Wine just hates me or something…but the ‘coupons’ I’ve been receiving for the last year + have been absolute crap. I’m talking ‘15% off mixed cases’, or at the very best ‘$15 off when you spend $100 or more’.

What happened to the 20% off specific regions regardless of quantity purchased that we used to get every other month or so? I haven’t seen anything good in a long time…which means I haven’t stepped foot into Total Wine in a long time. I have to imagine that I’m not the only one who only shops there when they have a solid coupon, am I??

Those 20% off any wine coupons were nice. I haven’t seen those in a couple of years. At best it’s 15% on Winery Direct if the price doesn’t end in a 7

Exactly! The ending in 7 thing was a little annoying…but better than the garbage that they send out these days.

Real question though - has anyone seen one of those magical 20% off a specific region coupons in a while? I THINK coupons vary by market, but i have not received one of those in a VERY long time (prob at least a year and a half).

Same here, haven’t seen better than 15% off (various - 15% off Italian, 15% off this or that, so on) in at least a year. I assume their sales were strong enough during COVID they didn’t need to offer 20% anymore.

I think you answered your own question there. They realized you only come in with a coupon, and you’re not a profitable customer for them. It’s not profitable for them to do so, so they stopped.

Also, they are making record profits right now with trying to ‘limit’ people in store, why would they send out 20% off coupons… wait until the pandemic is over, you’ll see 20% again…

Ding ding. Business is strong, they don’t need to drive volume through discounting right now.

All very, very good points! I bet you’re spot on and ill see those sweet, sweet 20% coupons once we’re out of this pandemic

Yeah it’s been about a year since I’ve seen one of these. But even the 20% coupon today would be basically worthless to me, as during the tariff era they increased their prices on Bordeaux so substantially as to essentially render any such coupon worthless. I’m out.

Same - only 15% off of mix 6 or at best 15% off of $100. Also agree that historical bordeaux prices were much cheaper so it’s difficult to find anything that “great” of a bargain. The pandemic can be part of the answer as to why the coupons are less, though they have had the luxury of staying open throughout. Also, even in the past, the bigger and better coupons excluded ones ending in “.97” so you weren’t going to get the discount on a particularly expensive bottle.

We have to keep in mind the average customer they bank on are the people who spend $20 a bottle and mix 6 to get 15% off; most people on this board are not their target market.

Ughhh, bummer! It’s been so long since I’ve been in TW (i.e. the coupon thing) that I didn’t realize their Bordeaux prices had gone up so much. Using the 20% on Bordeaux was def the move before, so sounds like I’d probably be dissapointed even with the coupon :frowning:

Yep, you’re spot on about the majority of their audience, and its a damn shame that it sounds like their Bordeaux prices have gone up so much. Sounds like I’m not missing out on much with the coupons these days anyway!

In some regions, they have reasonable prices at times in some categories. And rather incredibly, they can even have mistake prices across multiple stores.

But I agree – without coupons, its hard to justify a visit. My Google Maps timelines shows that I visit there 3 times a year on average.

Beer prices - and selection - are probably the best in my area, but that’s something we don’t consume much of, maybe 2-3 12 packs a year, during summer pool season.

I received a 20% off coupon from Total last week. Was going to use it, but noticed many of their 2019 Bordeaux prices jumped about 10-15 % on many items mid-week. :frowning_with_open_mouth:
