Summers here and I like Gewurtz but haven’t purchased a bottle in a long time. Whose dong good things with this varietal these days that I can find fairly easily for a reasonable tarriff? Thanks…
I always thought Gundlach Bundschu put out a well made Gewurz. It used to be under $20, but haven’t had it in a while.
Also, Elena Walch has one that is quite good also. I think that is under $20 also.
First off, I’m the importer/distributor for Beck-Hartweg so let me get that out there… but for Grand Cru (Frankstein) quality wines with a little age on them, the 2006 for $24.99 (Wally’s) and the 2004 $27.00 (K&L) won’t disappoint. Florian and his wines have developed a bit of a cult following due to the Berserker Day offering and his appearance as guest wine makers and I’ve been really happy to read that there haven’t been any unsatisfied customers to date.
Tercero “The Outlier” nails the mark.
I think Londer, Navarro, Hugel, and Trimbach might also fit into your parameters.
Under $20 excludes some faves but I definitely agree with Trimbach’s basic bottling and Navarro. Never had Londer and I don’t really remember Hugel that well.
I don’t know if you were looking domestic or not, but Tercero makes a terrific Gewurtztraminer called The Outlier. $17 at the LA Wine House or $20 from Tercero’s site.
91.1 average of 16 notes on CT: 2009 Tercero Gewürztraminer The Outlier, USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Barbara County - CellarTracker
Do you have a prererence for either vintage if I were to try just one?
Yeah, got one… but it is a few $$ above the $20.
The Arista Ferrington Gewurz is a really good, fully dry one that runs about $25. Worth every cent.
Thanks Chris, I’ll give this a try.
Not sure it would be called the “best” under-$20 GWT, but last year we were buying the Helfrich GWT ‘09 at WholeFoods
for about $10, and it was lip-smackin’ good. Especially w/ Weiners & kraut.

I’m one of those notes, and this would be my top recommendation as well.
Claiborne and Churchill make one in a milder style than the Tercero that can be quite nice, although I might not recommend it in every vintage.
I would strongly recommend you look at an NZ Gewurz (in my opinion the best i have come across outside of Alsace). Some good options
Huia - $13.99 at K&L
Lawson’s Dry Hills - $14.99 at JJ Buckley
Spy Valley - $16.99 at JJ Buckley
And Dry River and Vinoptima for higher end.
Bought a 6 pack of the 04 Frankenstein and since Larry was doing free shipping on a case I bought one of the Tecero. LA Wine only had 1 bottle left. Thanks for the recs guys.
damn, from daily 72 La Tache and 64 Leroy Grands Echezeaux to Gewurztraminer.
How the mighty have fallen!
(Save the good stuff for your next visit.)

Your most welcome and thank YOU for your support. I will look forward to your thoughts on the wine.
Trimbach is good.
Are their wines anywhere in the DC area?
No worries my friend, a visit to Utah next week should scratch the Burgundy itch (or a ytbd bottle for tonights 11 year anniversary dinner) but having some Gewertztraminer around for summer quaffing means NOT that the mighty have fallen, rather that different foods and different moods require different wine, and I happen to like the stuff! FYI Alan, save Sunday 8/21 evening for said next visit. I’ll try to get an email out this weekend.
Tercero “outlier”. Not even a question. I have had about a 1/2 a case of it and it awesome im glad I have a half of a case left. Will need to call larry soon to place another order. Look no further!
