Who makes the best Pinot Grigio?

No, I’m not kidding. Is there a Grigio really worth seeking out? Lageder makes a pretty good one, but I’m curious if any of you have any suggestions. I am not usually a Grigio drinker. That said, I sell tons of the stuff. What say you, is there a really good one I am missing to sell to our guests?

I’ve had a few dozen, and think they generally suck. Can’t get the appeal. But I do like Zenato Pinot Grigio. It’s decent.

Jermann, Schiopetto, Vie de Romans, Villa Russiz, Venica & Venica come to mind.

Tiefenbruner is a good one. It’s crisp, but also has a little more body and depth than most. Winebow is the importer.

Ostertag and Weinbach are the first two that come to my mind.

Ha! Was about to type “Alsace” as well. Although I will agree with John and say I’ve enjoyed Jermann’s as well.

Its a good topic. Scratching my head…I’ve never had an Italian pinot grigio that I liked much. Truth be told, I’ve only really had the Italian ones off of bad wine lists at Italian Restaurants so I’ve tended to avoid them like the plague. I prefer the Alsatian style.

And now for something completely different…

King Estate, Benton Lane, St. Innocent (much better recently) and Chehalem.

Colle Duga, Ronco del Gelso, Venica e Venica, Laimburg, Abazzia di Novacella, many more.

In my limited experience, ZH.

Pinot Gris…yes, I’ve had many good ones! Chehalem, R. Stuart come to mind right off the bat.

As Roberto and John report - Alto Adige and Friuli are the benchmarks for Pinot Grigio - you can’t go wrong with any of the producers they noted -

I’m a big fan of HOFSTATTER and FORADORI myself - another estate in Isonzo (Friuli) owned by an American Importer called SANT’ELENA is another very reliable label for Pinot Grigio -

Eyrie’s is fantastic.

To me, Kofererhof almost transcends the genre - the only reason I do not drink more of their Pinot grigio is because I like what they do with Kerner & Muller-Thurgau so much.

Had a 2007 Lemelson “Thea’s Selection” pg tonight with dinner. Very very delightful. I look forward to their 08’s.

John gives a good list but I would also include the Livio or Marco Felluga and for value Elena Walch

I do love what Kathleen Inman does with it. Took me by total surprise the first time I tried hers.

Oregon Pinot, Si.
Italian Pinot Grigio, No.

My two are Novacella and Dorigo.

I like Tedeschi but Zenato is very good too.
