Don’t give us your top 10 or even your top 2 or 3. Only name ONE best producer (that you have actually tasted) that you believe makes the best domestic PN. This is ofcourse calibrated to your palate and not a critic’s or board consensus favorite. Tell us a little bit about why this is the best IYO.
My all round favorite global producer is Mugnier from Chambolle Musigny. I love erethral, elegant PN. In that vain, my favorite domestic PN producer is LITTORAI.
I love the “Grace”, in particular. This is a very elegant feminine made wine, with silky tannins and beautifully refined fruits. It is never oaky and ages very well. Not the big bad boy masculine wine of some of their other bottlings. Those can be excellent also, in their place, but the Grace Vineyard stands out for its style. A wonderful made wine most every year, imo.
A consistantly excellent to outstanding Pinot that exemplifies the SCM terroir. On the elegant side, and a terrific ager. 20+ year old examples can be sublime.
I enjoy the different styles from others, like KB, Sea Smoke and Ed Kurtzman’s wines, but if I could only drink Pinot Noir from one producer, it would be Mount Eden.
Kutch! I don’t drink a lot of PN, but the ones I’ve had from Jamie have such great balance and harmony.
I love big extracted syrahs, zins, and petites, but I don’t like PN that is made that way. For example, I have had Beaux Freres a few times blind and think it’s a freak show.
There a number (a small number but still a number) of domestic producers I really like. But the best bottle of domestic pn I’ve ever had was an aged Mt. Eden. Though I have hopes that some others I’m cellaring will eventually get to that same level.
