Recently reunited with much of my wine collection which had been kept in a friend’s cellar for the past seven years. Among the many bottles I had forgotten about were two 2014 Once & Future petite sirahs which were absolutely fantastic upon opening. Not sure why I ever drifted away from this varietal, other than possibly because so few (or so I perceive) wine makers focus on it. For others who are fans of this grape, who/what are you are currently drinking?
Once & Future and Turley for the most part. Still have some Dirty & Rowdy PS in the cellar as well. I used to buy a lot from Ridge, but stopped back around 2016. Didn’t care for the direction.
I’ve heard great things about Palisades Canyon up in Napa - pricey but classic site whose vine cuttings have been used by many others.
I know that the Rockpile AVA used to produce some killer Petites - anyone familiar with anyone up there making any?
Cheers
Turley may be the go to for finding nice petite. Try palisades canyon and mending wall.
For a short while, Carlisle, and i would also add Theopolis.
Keplinger’s Sumo bottling is worth a try.
Turley and Outpost are my go-to. Foppiano is another. Had a 1991 Ridge last fall and it may be the best PS I have had. They require patience in my opinion.
I am fond of Retro Cellars.
Iron glove around a velvet fist, so to speak.
THANK YOU for the mention of Foppiano! I love their wines, particularly Petite Sirah. Foppiano and Pedroncelli are two excellent old-school wineries that get zero attention on this board, despite high quality and reasonable pricing. Quivira also makes excellent Petite Sirah, but IMO the best value among these is Foppiano.
Another vote for Foppiano, especially with several years of age.
Old story from long ago:
I liked a Foppiano Petite Sirah, bought a case of six half-gallons… glass, with screw tops and jug handles. Lay the case down for 10 years, then I opened one, invited everybody over and we killed the case in a week.
In 2018, I found a dusty bottle of 2009 Foppiano Petite languishing on the bottom shelf of a liquor store. It was fantastic.
Following with interest. This is a variety I usually enjoy, yet never pursue; I should change that.
Switchback Ridge is very good petite sirah. Very difficult to find.
Years ago, Rosenblum made fabulous petite sirah. I have not tried any in years.
The 1971 and 1974 Ridge York Creek Petite Sirahs are the best ever made from the grape.
In the past, I enjoyed Switchback Ridge. They seemed to be in a more large modern style with full-on fruit, befitting their Napa origin.
You’ve tried them all??? ![]()
How many Palisades?
Those two wines are in my top 20 all time of all the wines I have tried, so…
Considering what you’ve been able to drink, I concede that’s saying something.
