White Burgundy Stems

I am looking for stems as a housewarming gift for a friend. He is a fan of white Burgundy (Beaune and Chablis) and therefore I thought a 12 pack of Zaltos will be a good idea. From what I’ve read the Burgundy glass does wonders, but I couldn’t find any comments on how white Burgs will perform in the large bowl. For Zalto owners, would you recommend the Burgundy glass for white Burgs? Would appreciate any comments. Thanks in advance.

Apologies for starting another thread on stems. newhere

In my experience, the only white Burgundies which profit from a “ballon”-style Burgundy glass are top-class wines in their exuberant youthful stage or good wines which have been sufficiently aged. Other wines tend to drown in them. I prefer slightly narrower bowls, like the Spiegelau “Vino Grande” Burgundy glass for those.

I tasted out of Zalto glasses on a few occasions, but haven’t found them any sort of improvement over other similarly priced glasses from the likes of Speigelau, Schott-Zwiesel or Riedel. Last but not least, I find Zalto glasses coyote ugly.

A 12-pack of Zaltos would be an extraordinary gift, and I can only say that my friends are comparatively thoughtless bastards who have no idea how to properly warm a house.

There’s no glass anywhere near as elegant, thin-lipped, and yet apparently durable (I do not want to jinx myself, but suffice to say my wife and I drink from Zaltos almost every night as she all but refuses any other stem - knock on wood all is good).

We use the Burg glasses for some white burgs, just as Mike suggests. We also use the BDX glasses and the Universals, which are increasingly smaller bowls respectively. The BDXs get the most use, in general, but I’d be hardpressed to part with any of them.

I’ve been extremely happy with these stems from Crate & Barrel. They are very thin but have survived many trips through the dishwasher.

If you don’t like the “Zinfandel” label or want something with a slightly smaller bowl, there are smaller glasses in the series.

I’m firmly against the criminal inclusion of stems in white Burgundy

I am also new here and will add my 2 cents.
I love the Burgundy Zaltos both for reds as well as for whites, not only white Burgundies.
Riesling GG, Gruener Veltliner, Loire SB, etc: as soon as they have enough depth and complexity I find that their qualities are emphasized in these glasses.

I am sure your (very generous) housewarming gift will be very much appreciated over many years.

Thank you for all your inputs.

I too suspect that while the Zalto Burgundy will do wonders with the greatest White burgs, it may sometimes diminish village and 1er crus. Most of the suggested glasses are of the “traditional” shaped ones or smaller balloons. So I thought, would the Zalto Universal be a good candidate? I am more inclined to the Zaltos as the friend seems interested but do not own any yet.

In another thread on Burg Stems, Jeremy Seysses (Dujac) offered his preference for the Universal over Zalto’s Burg glass:

I use the Universals for white burg quite often and find them enjoyable, especially with younger wines. They would make a great gift.

The Reidel Oregon Pinot stems are my go-to for white Burg.

I’ve asked this before with no answer. I see a Sohn glass from Zalto available. Is this the same as the “regular” glass ?

I’m interested in knowing too. There is an article on his website about the collaboration, but it does not seem to suggest a new product and the pictured glass looks like the regular universal glass.

Riedel vinum Extreme Chardonnay are very good for Chardonnay.

The Zalto Sohn and Zalto Denk’Art are all the same design-- i.e., the Zalto Universal is a Zalto Universal no matter what other words appear in the description of the glass.

Thank you Emily.

I have other sizes of Zaltos, but I have found myself using the universals for almost everything. Love them. champagne.gif
