I think I’m up to 15 or so decanters in the house now. Cost Plus is a good source for under $15 but my favorite is Goodwill. Lots of kids get nice decanters as wedding gifts, they show up at Goodwill stores pretty regular for $10 and less.
I paid $20 for a Riedel one like that from Target. Works fine. I use measuring cups, vasesm wide bottom decanters, and a bunch of others picked up along the way including old Corbett Canyon bottles. They all work fine. Bob’s comment on Tuesday morning is good advice as well.
I’m with the others who use the cheap 1L carafe. We have a couple fancy Riedel crystal decanters, but bought the 1L carafes on clearnace from BB&B for $3.99 for a blind tasting party where we needed 8 identical decanters. These are much easier to clean and have a smaller wine surface area, both good things. Now the Riedel stays in the cupboard and the carafes get regular use.
My preference these days is the Riedel Merlot decanter, not because I drink any Merlot but because it is inexpensive (approx $25), good looking, and relatively narrow.
+1
I also have a few Waterfords which I actually use from time to time. I think they add a lot to the presentation of the wine.
Vivant is a cheaper line of Riedel, lead-free and maybe a bit thinner. The decanter is the same shape as the Cabernet decanter, the Syrah is more rounded on the bottom. Target had a sale on them a year or two back, selling them for $10 or less.
