I think that’s Saviah’s vineyard and I’ve definitely had their syrah as well as tempranillo from it. I always enjoyed the syrah but at the price point, I either gravitated to more budget offerings (Result of a Crush) or higher end offerings (Cayuse).

I subscribe to emails from Sean Sullivan (who started Washington Wine Report years ago, was at Wine Enthusiast for a while, and has since left to start his own publication, Northwest Wine Report) and he periodically sends out reviews via email to list members (free…recommended). A new winery name popped up in this recent email: Trothe Wines (strong reviews from Sean!). Always on the hunt for a great new WA winery, I hopped on their site to see what they’re all about. WOWZA! Their cab is $234, their Malbec is $162! Anyway…it was just a little shocking to see a newer winery come in at that price point, especially in Washington. I don’t think I’m a buyer. 
Unbridled overconfidence. Or maybe that’s unfair if they are actually doing something in production that actually justifies that cost but it’s hard to see how. It seems some think they can skip the part about having to prove yourself and your product to the consumer. It’s a tough business so I am almost always reluctant to say anything negative that might affect a small business trying to make it. But it’s hard not to have a wtf moment when you hear stuff like that.
Wow! That does seem a bit extreme. 162 for the Malbec has to be the most expensive Malbec from the US. I guess they are banking on the FOMO crowd, though in this economy that is a smaller community than it used to be.
I’m with you, Steve, I never want to hurt a small business. Sean loved the wines. From his email, it’s a new project started by a family that has been farming in the Horse Heaven Hills for several generations. The winemaker was a former winemaker for Chateau Ste. Michelle, Ray McKee. Good luck to them!

I’m half tempted to go for a bottle, post a tasting note, and proclaim it’s the best $162 Washington malbec out there…….prove me wrong.

I tried a relatively rare WA State sparkler (that isn’t Treveri!) over the weekend. I don’t necessarily regularly buy Rotie Cellars wines, but those that I have I’ve enjoyed. They came out with a sparkling wine and I grabbed a few. I didn’t take formal notes, but it was quite enjoyable. Just off-dry with great strawberry fruit and some enjoyable acidity. Those looking for a low dosage brut rose won’t like it, but I enjoyed it for what it is.

2013 Betz syrah Cote Patriarche
A little toned down in fruit and volume compared to the last I had in 2021 but still a large scale, dark, rich, fruit forward, well balanced and delicious wine with moderate complexity. Two years ago this was even bigger and burlier. I may have guessed a Carlisle or Bedrock syrah if served blind. As noted previously in this thread, there were challenges for WA in 2013 and it’s no benchmark vintage. Wines like this definitely have a place at my table as I like a variety of styles in my rotation, but my experience with that style of syrah from CA and WA tells me they don’t develop more complexity or become more interesting with time.4 (out of 5).
This was given to me by my brother, so I popped it last night. What a great wine!

2002 Two Mountain Winery Cabernet Sauvignon - USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Yakima Valley (4/16/2023)
Not going to lie, I was worried this was going to be too old. I shouldn't have. This was lovely, bought directly from the winery relatively recently as a library purchase. Hardly any bricking, dark fruits resonated, with a lovely earthy/coffee note underneath. Great Yakima Valley Cab!
