Then I think I’m mostly safe. My '05s are so limited it won’t take much time or space to run through them here …
an August Kesseler Goldkap Auslese (it was rockin’ and rollin’ in 2021)
a Karthauserhof Spat., which needs no more time
a Keller Auslese (have two bottles, and have never tried it; I figure I’ll pull one of these to take a peek)
the aforementioned Molitor Auslese **
some Prum
a Willi Schaefer Auslese
and a Schmitt-Wagner Auslese, which also seems to have avoided your '05 concerns, if the bottle I had in 2022 was representative.
… good to know stuff like this when back-filling. Thank you!
First time trying Julian Haart (not available in Israel, so I bought in NYC and brought home in my suitcase), very good stuff! Of course it’s very young, but you can never know if you like it until you taste it, if I wouldn’t tasted i wouldn’t have bought more
Great acidity, a little RS, but it’s balanced with the acidity, medium- body, good finish, lots of orchard fruits, a tiny bit of petrol on the nose (maybe I imagined )
If you have this one, wait at least 4 years!
I finally got Schafer-Frolich booked. I think this is my 5th time over there for work in the last 2 years and every time prior we couldn’t connect. Will have an empty wine suitcase coming with me!
Light straw yellow. Herbal, apple, citrus, grapefruit, mint, green notes, spicy, yellow flowers, mineralic. Fresh and salty, medium body, balanced and long lasting. 12% abv, with potential.
I believe this was Bert’s swansong vintage. Very clean and slate-y. Full in the mouth but not at all cloying on the lasting finish. Bought at PJ’s when Justin Berlin and Dan P were buying. Yum.
A very Riesling focused dinner. Wine of the night by common consensus was the Carl Loewen 1896 Riesling 2016. Honourable mentions for the Fritz Haag Auslese, Von Schuberts, and Prum.
Thank you for the reminder - had forgotten about Bert Simon. When I lived in Sacramento, Corti Bros. carried various bottlings for a long time. We would buy a mix of prädikats mostly of the Serrig Herrenberg.
2016 Trimbach Clos Ste Hune…what a nose! If this bottle were a fish, it would not meet the size limit and we would have had to throw it back, but it’s going to be a great catch someday!
I used to buy direct, stopped because I’m not getting over there as much and I also had some prematurely oxidized bottles from the 90s. This bottle was sourced locally in the Boston area. Did I hear correctly, that pricing in Ribeauville is over 200 Euro now?
If so, wow. But this was a 200 Euro nose, if there is such a thing.
