Which Riesling are you drinking?

A producer I used to buy from Bill Mayer at the Age of Riesling and love, although I don’t see the wines anymore except at the VDP auction. Great 2001s up and down the line.

Thanks! Sadly, some Saar estates would never acknowledge this and are in denial. In fact, one owner is quoted as saying that their “Kabinett is all the rage,” which is clearly untrue.

Valckenberg still imports Schloss Saarstein, along with Joh. Jos. Prüm, and more recently, Wwe. Dr. H. Thanisch—Erben Thanisch.

As you know, Bill Mayer of The Age of Riesling imported producers such as Vollenweider and Weiser-Künstler directly.

Yes, I was a long time customer of Bill’s dating back to when he sold me some 1990 auslesen while he was at Pacific.

Can’t remember past vintages having such a low ABV :man_shrugging:t2: a good wine nevertheless and likely to remain a rebuy.

  • 2022 Georg Breuer Riesling Terra Montosa - Germany, Rheingau (13.10.2026)
Fruity aromatics on the nose but on the ”just ripe” part of the spectrum. Peach, lemon, grapefruit, honeydew and a very early promise of emerging petrol. A bit of a chalky edge to it as well but mostly fruit. On the palate this is relatively broad and concentrated yet quite restrained, tight and minerally in its expression. The 11.5% ABV is more apparent here as the fruit is for the most part of tart citrus fruits. Excellent acidity and some phenolic grip. Somewhat nervous and by no means revealing all that it’s got right now. Still, drinks very well especially with a creamy salmon dish. An interesting style in how it combines low ripeness with power.

just got the email for the 2027 Rieslingfeier, 1/16/27. hoping I can attend this year!

You mean next year.

Amazing deal! I hope 18 bottles was all that was available.

As did Bob Collins, owner of Old Vine Imports. Based on how enthusiastic he was, I purchased 2001-05s directly from Bob.

I bought some Vollenweider (01 Portz, 02 WG spatlese) directly from Bob, too. Seemed like a very nice mam.

That’s interesting. Back in the day, Vollenweider had two California-based importers: The Age of Riesling and Old Vine Imports.

Two Falkenstein dinners this year!

Are you sure? I heard about one for next year, but I don’t know the details.

I heard two from a good source!

But that’s early next year, right?

Let me guess. One is in Williamsburg, and the other is in the East Village.

Normally, I would have bought Vollenweider from Bill (Age of Riesling). But I had reached out to Bob to ask if he could refer me to retailers to whom he had sold the 1995 Bonnefond Ruchottes, which I had fallen in love with at a Roumier tasting in Florida Roy Hirsch talked me into attending where Christophe poured all of his 95s (save the Musigny), and Bob offered to sell me six from his personal cellar. So I filled the case with Vollenweider.

I still have two of the Ruchottes. Lovely wine.

Disclaimer - I’m selling these

Max’s first Auslesen under his own labels. There will be 2026s too.

Poured almost colourless, huge extract, very clean fine botryits. Super drinkable style. Need time for sure.

Top notch young Spatlese. As good an example of this that I can remember.

It used to be more widely available. I think they have switched (or had to switch) importers a few times in the last 10-15 years.
