I would go with Ulli Stein Blauschiefer. Made from steep vineyards that are 60-80 year old vines. I would say it might be the absolute best value in the entire wine world.

I love the Donhoff Trocken idea (it’s even a little below your price range), and there are many other great choices, but keep in mind that obvious petrol is not common in young German Riesling. You’d have an easier time finding that in Alsace. Unless people are extremely sensitive to it, they might not find any in good, young German Riesling.

• 2023 Desire Lines Riesling Experimental #14 The Leap Deodora
Forgot to post this and forgot to write a tasting note at the time. I do remember this requiring some air to open up. Loads of fresh lemon/lime, a pronounced granite streak. Refreshing. How Desire Lines can churn out all these top notch wines at extremely reasonable prices is beyond me. Proof that you really do not need to spend a fortune to have a terrific cellar. This was yet another winner, one that would probably reward a few years in the dark.

Opened my first bottle of this tonight. OMG it is so delicious. Love the Elisenberg bottlings (kabinett and spatlese) from Richter. The 2015 kabinett is my favorite 2015:kabinett.

This was quite nice. Lots of acidity which I like that balances the lime and pear palate. Need to pick up some more of these.

Tabasco-like aroma as uncorking! Nose is weak at this point, am getting a very sandy dustiness, spiciness is clearly on the throat, fruit is saline and exotic, getting the usual yellow fruit and pomelo, we're not that far from Wehelener Sonnenuhr in primaries; yeast detectable throughout as a kind buttery breadiness;
Nose of red bell pepper and tomato pasta sauce, Meyer lemon, effervescence; acids feel like a vegetal, tangy, savoury-tartness; finishes with a dark rockiness and again, the same savoury vegetalness and occasionally an out-of-place sweetness; overtime finish becomes more of a powdery sweetness with a hint of astringency;
Sweet spot 45 minutes in, a rhubarb, cinnamon, green peppercorn and herbal infusion on the nose; maybe some pineapple; palette remains minty, spicy almost entirely tertiary; still medium-low acids and the same spice on throat; nose can get grainy, perhaps more chalky than slate; overall nose ends with a similar earthiness to a 21' Wittmann Morstein GG; (93 points)

Herr Reinhardt in his biweekly column in the FAZ sings a pean to the Mosel and her Rieslings, and is worried about the future. And he chooses the Eschburg of all things to make a case how great and affordable the wines can be !

2021 Kuhling-Gillot Rothenberg
Rheinhessen, own rooted. Year in year out ranked among top German Rieslings (also pricewise).
A powerhouse of Riesling, yet vibrant and energetic. A sensory rollercoaster: salinity, smoke, yellow fruit, crushed rocks, coming at you in revolving combinations, different at every sip.
A German would say Grosses Kino.

Countless aged pradikat Rieslings have landed this way for me. My running hypothesis is This is How Aged Bottle Funk Lands with Riesling. … would love to hear others’ experience and/or opinions.

From 375. Light gold color. Not much of a nose. But very big palate of orange marmalade and limes. Very sweet.

Just had the 2024 Stein Blauschiefer last week over the course of a few days. Damn man, what a delicious wine. That’s one of those wines where, if I’m being indecisive some night over what bottle to open, I can always default to it and be happy. Packs so much punch for like $30

I bought from Eight One Eight Wines and a guy named Marcelo Waldheim and now that I google him, I do see he has a new outfit and they do have Ludes on the webshop! So I’ll reconnect there and see what he might have!

I would generally recommend Kloster Eberbach wines as a blanket statement, but thought it worth highlighting the Zehntstück for anyone able to grab some this year - it’s a single parcel Riesling coming from the oldest parcel in Kloster Eberbach’s famous Steinberg vineyard (vines planted in 1136). It’s one of my favorites of their single parcel wines (crispy, bright, super delicious), BUT when I visited a couple weeks ago, the Kloster Eberbach guys said they were going to discontinue the line and just use the grapes for the Steinberg single vineyard wines. Don’t know when/if they’re going to bring it back, so grab some to enjoy if you can!
Also for anyone visiting in person, they have more aged wines from the ‘Schatzkammer’ for sale than listed online - they only list the bottles they have multiple of online, in person they offer a few which are the last of that kind. I got a couple of fun red still wines from 1961 and 1962, and a Beerenauslese from the 70s!
