Which glass do you prefer for Vintage Port?

Like to see what others think. Serving a 1986 Graham Porto Vintage Malvedos, my thought is to use my Universal Glasses for the service. My wife thinks it needs to be served in more traditional style glasses. What does everyone here “LIKE” to serve vintage port in? Thoughts appreciated!

During a heavy Port drinking phase, my wife gave me a set of port pipes. Very interesting, not sure they enhance the wine. It’s usually a white wine Riedel for me.

I use a smallish glass like I use for dessert wine or sherry.

Riedel vinum port glasses. I’ll endorse them. Picked up a few and were worth it. We inherited Waterford glassware including port- and sherry-specific glasses which are fun once in a while but don’t do anything for nosing the wine.

I’ll add to my previous post that I think a glass with a small volume is important for ameloriating the higher alcohol/vapor in port. The smaller bowl of the Riedel vinum port glass is perfect getting max complexity in the nose while minimizing any fuminess from the higher alcohol.

I don’t have Vinum port glasses, but I use glasses with a similar shape. Overly large or overly closed off glasses accentuate the high alcohol, but collecting some bouquet is desirable.

So let me be more direct…if I use a more “universal glass” (like from Glassvin). What are my risk/benefits?

I can only speculate but you may enjoy the wine immensley. But someone who’s senstivie to high ETOH or fuminess might not enjoy it as much as they should. Please let us know what you find out if you try it. Thanks.

Grassl Mineralité is my latest go-to for Port.

A small white wine glass is perfect, which is what I use mostly. The Port industry is slowly moving away from the old smaller Port glasses.

However, for me, there is an exception for very old VPs. I still prefer a Riedel Port glass for VP’s more than about 40 years old. I find the older more delicate ones show aromatics better in the traditional Reidel Port glass.

I can definitely see that. I’ll do a side-by-side of that with the Riedel vinum port and post the results in near future. Thanks

I have a pair of port glasses I’ll use if I’m finishing dinner and want something quick to pour, but I’ve found that I really enjoy using the Riedel “extreme” Rosé/Champagne glasses quite a bit, so I’ve been using those much more often.

I use a standard sized white wine glass. It gives plenty of room for swirling and sniffing. Those tiny glasses a lot of people use are worthless, IMHO.
