Vilmart always delivers, and once again, Vilmart is glorious in 2012. Beguiling and complex. Sour orange…Manderinquat! Sweet brown spice. Long finish. I usually wait a dozen+ years on these, and while this could use a few more years, it’s already delicious. 2016 disgorgement
First time I tried 1522 was at Le Fête du Champagne in '18 and it was the '08 vintage. I thought it was a really good value so I picked up magnums and they have been good, but I think they need more time in that format. I bought 750’s of the '12 and this shows much more fruit, with the pinot in the forefront. It reminds me a bit of Val Vilaine.
Jon
You can’t go wrong with those. On the Vilmart hierarchy, the Rosè is now above the Coeur de Cuvèe. I have a lot of those too, and ordered some 2013’s.
Cheers,
Warren
Hey JJL, maybe it’s typo on your post but Warren’s bottle above is Grand Cellier d’Or. I’m not trying to be a picky jackass here but there is a qualitative difference between GC and GCdO. GCdO 2013 was my WOTY last year, and that GCdO cuvee continues to fly under the radar, although I suppose not for Warren, myself and a few other guys. FWIW, I wanted to call out the distinction, and you can still post back that I am a picky jackass if you like.
Frank, you caught me being too lazy to type d’Or. I thought it was ok since we were talking vintage GC which I thought could only be d’Or or Rubis and Warren was not talking rosé. I will admit that I am not a Vilmart expert. I bought a case of ‘08 CdC on release and it was gone within 2 years. I loved it but never bought any Vilmart again until recently after seeing all the love here from you, Warren and others. I have the current disgorgement of the GC, which I have tried and thought was a great value. and the ‘12 and ‘13 Emotion which I have not taken delivery of yet. Don’t you have the ‘13 Emotion? Did you try it yet?
John, GCdO (Grand Cellier d’Or) and CdC (Coeur de Cuvee) are both vintage, but Grand Cellier is not a vintage wine. Yeah, for sure, Grand Cellier is great value and a wine (for me) that I drink and backfill but I tend to buy larger blocks of GCdO and CdC for aging, much like you tried to do for 2008 CdC.
I’ve got 2013 CdC and Emotion but yet to open them. I’m trying to find the right small setting to do them side by side with just a few guys so we can talk about the wines and get a baseline for them. My hunch is that I will like them and reload some more of them. While others here are chasing Collin and Bouchard, thank god (for now) that the best wines of Laurent Champs are not getting the same frenzied attention. For me, they are some of the best in Champagne.
PSA, Woodland Hills Wine Co has the 2015 and 2016 Vilmart Grand Cellier d’Or on pre-arrival for $85 which seems like a good price from what Winesearcher is telling me. Order in.
The 2015 is already showing sold out but '16 is available. Seems like a good price I put in an order for a few. I’ve been wanting to try this based on recommendations here but seems like it’s in high demand.
Opened a lovely magnum of 2010 Champagne Deutz Parcelles d’Aÿ Hommage à William Deutz to drink with a fantastic cold seafood platter. I thought it was showing beautifully - quite vinous and generous, but with a very elegant and delicate mousse. It really needed some time open - at first it was a little shy, but with air and warming a few degrees it started showing some nice depth and complexity. I’d had this wine out of 750 before and it was brilliant. The magnum is perhaps a little behind in terms of development, though I trust it will get to the same level. A very nice showing for Deutz, which doesn’t get a lot of love, and a strong result in the difficult 2010 vintage.
I’ve been liking every Deutz I’ve opened lately. They also treated us better than any other winery during our visit last October (private tour, gourmet lunch and an extensive tasting). I’m a big fan of this house.
NV Delamotte Champagne Brut Rosé- France, Champagne (3/2/2022)
This is the first time i’ve ever had their Brut Rose…very pretty wine! I believe 80% Pinot from Bouzy, Ambonnay and Tours-sur-Marne…20% Chard from Le Mesnil-sur-Oger…2012 base?..8g/l dos…very refreshing elegant bubbles, with a good prickle of blood orange acidity…dancing in a field of wild strawberries and raspberry bushes…crisp and precise on the palate…wonderful crushed rock salty dryness…tart cherry skin…not much of a mousse though…but it is well balanced and tamed, so no need for any creme to calm. A lovely wine, but nothing earth shattering…and at the $69 price point I paid, seems over priced imo. I’d drink it all day long at $35, like the reg Brut. (93 pts.)
2008 Pierre Peters Blanc de Blancs Les Chetillons. This was one of the toughest cork extractions I’ve had, but the struggle (which included a broken cork and a corkscrew) was worth it. The wine walks the line between power and grace, youth and maturity. So stunning, it distracts from conversation. Lemon cream, warm yeasty brioche, chamomile, ginger. It started strong yet improved through the night. This was a perfect start to our champagne-enhanced holiday!
Despite gentle treatment, this Champagne exploded out of the bottle. Nice mousse once it got that out of it’s system. Solid yellow color. Inviting, fresh, honey blossom on the nose. Palate starts with a hint of apple sweetness and then WHAM the zero dose throws a grapefruit in your face. We enjoyed it (my ever surprising wife more so than I did), but I liked the recent 2015 Presence (zero dose BdB) significantly more.
A famous wine influencer recommended Marie Courtin and then post on CT that this is his least favorite version of Resonance. Love ya Frank!
