Which Champagne are you drinking?

Your impressions of Andre Clouet Brut Un Jour de 1911?
Local wine merchant is featuring it. I have seen mostly positive comments here and elsewhere. The blend of older vintages and the low dosage (1gm/L ?) along with the very reasonable price intrigue me. I have seen folks mention laying it down, but I’d be more interested in near term consumption. Thanks.

Better with a few years but fine for now. A great value for a really nice champagne.

Cheers,
Warren

I have been guilty of this Warren! [snort.gif]
But I actually did look at a few previous posts on this Champagne including yours. I was intrigued enough to get a bottle to try but hesitant after seeing the comments about laying it down for a while. Sounds like it will be nice either way. Thanks.

  • 2017 Antoine Bouvet Champagne Saignée de Bisseuil - France, Champagne (2/25/2022)
Continuing my exploration of Antoine Bouvet’s wines. 100% Pinot Noir rose de saignee made from vines planted in the Les Pautes vineyard of Bisseuil in 1964. Disgorged 8 Feb. 21 with 2 g/l dosage. Pours a dark cranberry red color. Very strong nose of varying red fruits and a small hint of earthiness. Slightly reductive at first, it moves through the same red fruit as the nose, finishing with a little hint of sweetness. Measuring directly against the Monts de la Vallee from last night, the Blanc de noirs is my preference at the moment.

This showed a bit simple compared to last night’s Cuvee. Not sure what it’s evolution will look like with more age, but for relative value I don’t think I’ll buy this rose again.

Edit: as it warmed up a bit more it continued to degrade into an uninspiring wine. I really liked the BdN last night, but this I won’t be buying again

Jim,
I’ve bought a lot of these, but have only opened two of the recent releases. Last week, Marybeth and I thought it was fantastic before and after dinner, perfect for current consumption but poised to age really well. The bottle last night seemed like it could have used a little more aging, but it was cold and had spent six hours the day before in the luggage compartment of a plane. Maybe it was travel shock or simply too cold. If it hadn’t been for those variables, I’d have thought it was bottle variation. However, in my case, I think it’s more often a case of palate variation than bottle inconsistencies.
I’ll open another when I get home to see. I just ordered some more too. I’m going deep on this one.
Cheers,
Warren.

Abandoned the wine 2 posts above.

  • NV Krug Champagne Brut Grande Cuvee Edition 169eme - France, Champagne (2/25/2022)
Out of 375. Rich, slightly smoky, lots of acid at this young age. Underneath there’s plenty of fruit character waiting to break free. Feels a little shut down, but great potential.

I love having Krug in .375’s. It’s one of the few I can say that about.

Agree, LOVE Krug in 375 for a number of reasons (aperitifs, early check in’s, nights like tonight). We also keep a number of cheaper champagne 375s of all sorts, mostly from Envoyer/Lopa for later in the evening when we talk ourselves into a nightcap.

2006 TAITTINGER COMTES de CHAMPAGNE BLACN de BLANC- I’ve previously mentioned I’ve had quite a few of this release, {~#76 here} and I can easily say I’ve loved every bottle; what is surprising is this is getting even better which I did not think possible a year or so ago as I’ve been 100% satisfied; the hallmarks of this bottle were it’s incredible richness, creaminess and balance; the aromatics and taste profile were redolent of allspice, mildly toasted brioche, honeysuckle, lemon, apple and peach with an emphasis on the lemon; we sipped it for over 2 hours and it held a steady course, much to our delight.

  • 2013 Roses de Jeanne / Cédric Bouchard Champagne Blanc de Noirs Cote de Bechalin - France, Champagne (2/26/2022)
pop and pour the acid is a little strong on the front of the tongue, but it quickly moves to that classic Bouchard/Bechalin super ripe orchard fruit note that carries on for ages. Perfect balance of fruit and richness. 30 minutes in the initial acid pop has calmed down and settled into the usual complementary role it plays. The 2013 still seems to be very approachable and open.

Blake,

As you might know, I’ve too have always loved this wine. I used to wonder why it was so controversial, but I guess some might find it garish. I agree with you; it’s luscious. I thought I had bought enough to drink it for decades, but I’m now rationing them having opened way too many.

2004 Charles Heidsieck Blanc de Millenaires is a beautiful wine. It combines elegance and power. The extended lees contact is evident. Brioche, citrus and minerals if I’m to pick three words. I’m really enjoying 2004’s from the Côte des Blancs, and this wine in particular is very good. Great upside potential.

Brothers in the Comtes we are Warren.

Médot Extra-Brut (disgorged on 11/2020).

Prevost Fac-Simile rosé LC16. Not sure I see the fuss.

Nice note, we really need something to fill the spot of the '95. I had the '04 twice in France shortly after release and it was too young then. I had a bottle of the '06 late last year and it was not good, hopefully just an off bottle. I see they recently released the '07 in Europe but I can’t find any reviews. However, I would not expect '07 to be as good as '95.

Agreed, Jon - that '95 was magical and, possibly, singular. Nothing has come close since then, for me, though the '04 is very nice. I’ve only had the '06 once and liked it, but wasn’t wowed.

Maybe '08 (assuming there is one) will hit those magical notes again?

It will be different than the ‘95, but this last bottle of ‘04 impressed me much more than previous bottles I’d opened too soon. I’m very optimistic about this one.
Cheers,
Warren

Over the weekend, just the two of us went to dinner for the first time in ages and toted this along:
