Which Barolos and Barbarescos or More Feminine/Lighter?

All other things being equal, I generally prefer Barolos and Barbarescos that tend more to the lighter side (more feminine and less masculine?).

Suggestions from vintages since 2004 are welcome.

Thanks.

Alto Piemonte! Try Ferrando’s Carema white label (Rosenthal), fairly easily sourced and nice on the wallet ($40-50).

If you like lighter alcohol, leaner but with plenty of structure i.e. more roses than tar, then Ghemme, Gattinara et al are great.

If it’s something with just a little less of structure & intensity, then there are plenty of lower level producers making perfectly attractive wines, plus the best Langhe nebbiolo / nebbiolo d’alba might appeal. There should be plenty of good ones, but what’s local to you might be the driver. A good example that Birger on the UK wine pages forum unearthed was Giuseppe Nada, making very attractive Barbaresco around the $30 mark. Indeed as he likes his nebbiolo young (the fool!) his tastes often avoid the most structured, so his posts might be worth a look at.

Lighter in color or weight?

You may want to check out DeForville Barbaresco. you might like the juice coming out the Cannubi cru.

Lighter in weight

Thanks Ian. I like structure and don’t mind a lot of alcohol if its balanced. For lack of a better description, I guess what I’m saying is that I like more feminine than masculine Barolos and Barbarescos. (Changed the OP title thinking this may better describe what I’m after).

You might be better to look up north in Piedmont. Or over in Valtellina maybe Ar Pe Pe. But some Barolo producers to consider are - Brovia, Burlotto and Cappellano.

Brezza, Massolino, Poderi Colla and Marcarini tend to be on the prettier end of the spectrum, but with good intensity.

Orsolani Le Tabbie (Carema)

I don’t know about Cappellano. Monprivato. G Rinaldi’s cannubi San lorenzo? Also Sottimano’s barbarescos.

Would Produttori del Barbaresco Pora fall in this category with some age? It’s supposed to be the lightest cru from what I’ve read. I’ve had the 08 and 09 and both were light wines, but I would not say they were feminine by my definition, but could end up that way with some time.

I have very little B/B experience, but Burlotto Monvigliero 2008 was definitely feminine. And its mentioned above.

Also I find Travaglini Gattinara, which should be widely available, to be softer and some might say feminine too. Approachable when younger too. And affordable. And tasty IMO.
