Slowly building out the Barolo part of my cellar but very much a beginner in the area - and it’s an expensive proposition in Australia. My wine allowance is already in the red, so I can only purchase one of the below without significant further wrath from she who must be obeyed. Which one do I buy? Planning on cellaring the wine for the long haul. Prices in USD, incl tax.
I haven’t yet drunk enough Barolo to know what my preferred style/producer is, so this is a long-term punt on future enjoyment.
From my reading on this board - thanks Bill, Bill, Ken, Greg and John in particular - I don’t think I can go too far wrong with either of these, but advice gratefully received.
I suspected the answer from those in the know was always going to be ‘both’…
If I do pull the trigger on them both I may not be around long enough to see them - the wrath is a righteous thing - but this may be one of those risks worth taking.
The Falletto could/should be found less expensively later on.Not in the same league with the Bartolo, especially at $20 more…that said,I bought it… but early on for $100.
Bill, I’m doubtful that it will get any cheaper in Australia and there’s not much Giacosa for sale here. I think this is already a pretty good buy for our level of pricing.
By way of comparison, the Vietti 2009 Castiglione is about US$95.
I’m just a man of peace, love, and understanding when it comes to Barolo!
If you want a really serious answer, I would buy the Giacosa since it is harder to get there. Also, while I am still quite hopeful about the future of the winemaking there, I have no concerns about B. Mascarello.
That’s interesting. On the pricing I see back vintage Giacosa in the States tends to be higher than B. Mascarello. Not so long ago I picked up the 2005 B. Macarello Barolo for just under $80, while, from the same source, 2004 Giacosa Barbaresco Rabaja was selling for nearly twice that. Am I looking in the wrong places; or somehow comparing apples and oranges (vintage difference)? (I am by no means a Piedmont person at the level of those posting in this thread.)
And when, by the way, would folks try to drink either of these wines?
Bartolo no question. 05 will co
E around before 06, which I believe is generally lost the immediacy of most of the surrounding vintages. I’d be prepared to wait 20 years for it to peak. As a vintage it reminds me of 99.
