Which 2019 Burgs Have You Loaded Up On?

Would greatly appreciate some guidance for old timers like myself (nearing 60) as to which 19s would be approachable in 3-5 years and show some additional development and not be a complete waste to drink. Recommendations in the $50-$75 range. Thanks in advance.

Others will have more wisdom than I do, but I think the Lumpp wines discussed in the earlier comments fit this bill pretty well. Also villages wines from Drouhin.

Look to Marsannay for one. Domaine Bart comes to mind and for less than $50.

2009 + 2010 = Mama Mia! Glad I bought deep (my biggest burgundy vintage buy). I bought deep because (i) sounds like a vintage up my speed (and now I’m more excited with the '09+'10 comparison! Big fruit + precision! Sounds delicious), (ii) birth year, (iii) William Kelley’s notes and (iv) I think buying Burgundy in 2020 and beyond is a harder game (access and prices) so I went deeper this year that I otherwise would have. A little concerned with the higher alcohol, but the experts say not to worry (kinda like 2016 nebbiolo) - although I am increasingly appreciating lower alcohol wines. Genuinely excited for 75%+ of these wines - but one cannot taste before buying these days, so I’m curious for the other 25%. There is a strong overlap with William’s reviews. I bought outside of the Nuits for the first material time this vintage (not sure if its climate change or I’m Christopher Colombus ‘discovering’ a new region with William as my chief navigator - but great stuff to be found here!). Now I just need to live till 2035-45 (no small feat). FWIW, these are mostly 1er Cru purchases.

In no particular order and varying amounts, I bought:
Nuits: Guyon, Duroche, Faiveley, Hudelot Noellat, Felettig, Millot, Coquard Loison Fleurot, Eugenie, Chevillon, H Lignier, Desaunay-Bissey.
Beaune: Lafarge, Violot-Guillemard, Bouley, Guyon, Bouchard
Chalonnaise: Bruno Lorenzon

For lower price ‘value’, some great stuff outside of the Nuits:

  • 2015 Lorenzon Piece 15 was beautiful/expressive a couple months ago, and WK rated 2019 higher…
  • 2019 Lafarge Vendanges Selectionnes was chock full of phenolic material for $75, maybe needs more time, but was full of red fruit and energy. Tempted to buy some villages here.
  • Bouley is great
  • Guyon’s Savigny Peuillets was excellent and I have heard good things about the Bourgogne. Buying '20s of these despite the substantial price increases.

For all my complaining about Burgundy prices, there is a lot of great wine for under $100 out there. Sure I could trade all these bottles of wine for one bottle of Rousseau on the secondary market… but these are great bottles of wine that I’d rather not trade away.

Excellent post that mentions a number of my favorites. Lafarge VS is such a gem.

I bought a fair bit of 2019 burgs, but I wish I bought more after trying some of the village wines from Claude Dugat, Duroche, Hudelot Noellat, Felettig and Mugneret Gibourg

CdN - Fourrier, Hudelot Noellat, Mugneret Gibourg, Duroche, Chevillon, Domaine Guyon, Lachaux (Arnoux and Charles), CLF, Cathiard, Faiveley, Claude Dugat, Bertheau, Felettig
CdB - Coche Dury, Olivier Leflaive, Benjamin Leroux, Henri Germain, Jean Marc Vincent
Chablis - Raveneau
Chalonnaise - Dureuil Janthial

I’ve been mostly binging on Faiveley Mercurey. I drank through more than a six pack of the VV while waiting for others (Framboisiere, Myglands, Clos du Roy and Roy Favorite). Then when the Framboisiere showed up I tried one and ordered another case.

I usually like the Bart Marsannays but I tried two of the 2019s and felt they were a bit candied.

I’ve had just one Guillemot Savigny (Serpentieres) but based on that bottle I think those should be excellent.

All of these are $40-60.

Speaking of Mercurey: I had a bottle of Chateau de Santenay Mercurey 1er Cru Vieilles Vignes in Paris in December. If I could find it here I would gladly take two cases.

2019s so far:
Mugneret Gibourg, decent amount of each grand cru, more ruchottes than the others, for whatever reason.
Trapet Chambertin
Rossignol Trapet Chambertin
Lamarche La Grande Rue
Hudelot Noellat Bourgogne, Suchots, Clos Vougeot, Richebourg, Romanee Saint Vivant, and Chambolle AC

Duroche Champ, GC, and LSJ (not VV)

I recently picked up a bunch of '19 Mongeard GE. I bought the '05 a few years ago at auction and liked it but the '19 is in a different league. The '19 is so much more refined and brighter. I think William nailed it in his tasting note. I bought a bottle of the Bourgogne yesterday and Corvin’d a glass last night that I drank over a couple of hours. It is a really nice wine for $30.

Yeah that Bourgogne is a silly deal. A local place here had it for $22. I should have bought it all.

That is a steal at that price.

I bought 3 cases of the 18 MM BR and already drank through 2 of them. They were better early and then started to go a bit jammy this year so put away my last case for a few years and then proceeded to forget about the 19. Thanks for the reminder. I picked up 2 cases at $27 and looking forward based on the reviews. I’m hoping to love it because I always see more bottles on closeout later in the year.

Have the Dureuil-Janthial Rully’s come and gone or not yet arrived. Only a couple of stores on wine-searcher with them, one on futures, the other in a state that doesn’t ship to me.

6 or 12 bottle cases?

I find myself nearly never buying Bourgogne because I never have an opportunity to drink it.

These are American cases. I drink less and less BR/BB, but still a couple of bottles a week.

Thank you!

After he was wiped out by frost in 2021, Vincent tried to slow down sales and deliveries. So I think not yet arrived.

William, having just subscribed, I love your coverage of the “lesser” appellations - very, relevant to me because where I am in life, new vintage Grand Cru’s are close to being beyond my consumption horizon.

You may have answered it elsewhere but I think your 94 point Givry is the same excitement as a 94 point Chambolle-Musigny i.e., you don’t score relative to the local commune but across all of Burgundy.
