I’m trying InVintory and I seem to be adding quite a bit of my wine manually that’s not already in the system. I suppose it’s more convenient than an excel sheet. I didn’t love Cellar Tracker’s interface although it does have a larger library of wines.
First, welcome to the board! I agree that the search function can be less than useful when you are searching for something very general or for words that are quite common.
I would humbly suggest that you 1) assume any topic that is firmly on the beaten track (like inventory programs) has been discussed a lot here already and so, 2) spend some time going over the first 10 - 15 pages or so of threads. Just to see what titles are on there, obviously not to read every single one of them. You will find many interesting threads you may want to dig into and it will help you jump into discussions with a great frame of reference.
Let me save you some time . . . they all come out with CellarTracker being the best, even if they identify limitations, complaints, gripes, repeated suggestions for features that Eric (the founder/inventor) may or may not have promised to create, etc.
We know that we can do a LOT better than our current mobile app and are midstream on a major rewrite. I can’t promise a specific timeline yet though.
And our goal this year is to grow the team from 4 fulltime members to 10. (We have 3 folks coming on board fulltime in the next 2 weeks.) All that to say, after 18 years of working on CellarTracker, we know there is a lot more potential there and are taking that very seriously. At the same time, we also are not looking to make change for the sake of changes, since we know that a lot of people know and love us.
I’d think this to be a very popular opinion. I almost never use the mobile app and instead just go to the full-blown desktop version even if on my phone. It’s just so much more functional.
Cellar Tracker for me. While I agree that the app could use some improvements, I still love it for the iPhone camera integrated barcode scanning ability. I use this to “consume” wines as I pull them out of the cellar, and it’s especially handy the morning after when there are multiple bottles lined up that need to be deleted from my inventory (scan, consume…scan, consume…scan, consume). For wine going in to the cellar I use a PC and the website with a barcode printer, which works pretty smoothly and efficiently. Currently, I would not use the phone app to add wines to my cellar; too slow and would require special barcode printer. Overall, I don’t know of another service with as deep a library, barcode printing, and phone integration with such a low cost (donations).
