I know today is going to be a rough day at work. Many of the staff stay after shift for shift glass. I was wondering what kind of wine is your go-to for a tough day.
Any number of wines that are made by friends…
Baudry Chinon, Grezeaux or Domaine.
Bedrock Evangelho for red or the Selbach-Oster Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Ur Alte Reben Feinherb for white.
Alma Cattleya Pinot — It is reasonably priced and the wine is balanced and delicious.
I’m with Robert on this. Wines made by people I’ve met or spent a fair amount of time tasting with.
Scherrer Zinfandel (everyday)
Dujac Morey St Denis (upgrade)
Bulletproof no-thinking required deliverers of comfort
Goodfellow Chardonnay (or Pinot)
Vilmart Champagne
I drink wine because I like it and to share with friends. My burg group got together for our monthly dinner last night and we had a great time, as usual.
I rarely if ever drink wine because I had a rough day.
Yep, wine made by Berserkers or those wineries that take part in Berserker Day!!

I think the OP’s use of the word “comforting” shows that this question is not really about drinking to block out the rough day or drinking to forget or something with potentially negative connotations. I understand this question to be about what wine makes me feel particularly good, safe, warm, happy, along with tasting good, to be sure. I don’t think there’s anything negative at all about wanting to give yourself a special experience after a trying day.
Egly-Ouriet rosé for me.
Been needing some comfort myself lately, with harvest in full gear. Ridge zins, La Rioja Alta wines, and featherlight Kabinetts are the wines that feel the most like home to me.
Same here. After a rough work day, it’s usually a couple of (or a few) beers, then some nice single malt whisky (usually Scottish, sometimes Japanese or Irish).
After a very tough day at work, or a victory at work, I really do like to pop something special for the pure enjoyment of the passion we have here. Popping something on a whim, just because, is very comforting and fun to me. Even if I’m drinking alone at home on a weeknight.
Did this recently with a Jamet Cote Rotie. Now that I think about it, I did it last year with a 2010 Jamet that was exceptional. Also Did it this past week with a Beta Monticello.
Of course, the most comforting wine to me is just a classic old Sociando Mallet. And on one of those tough days, or really really good days, maybe I will open the Jean Gautreau Cuvee.
I wondered how long into the thread it would be before someone posted a reply like this.
For me, OP, it’s something that’s “easy” to enjoy like any number of Cabs/blends from Soos Creek: lower tanning usually, a great person as a winemaker, and local ties. Comforting indeed.
A stiff Manhattan
A nice Champagne, especially BdB: Lately we like LeHerte, Marguet, Savart, Glavier
A reliably-tasty, not-too-high-falutin’ red Burg: Audoin Marsannay Favieres, Anything Berthaut-Gerbet, Lafouge Auxey Duresses 1er, Drouhin Chambolle 1er, Fourrier Gevrey vv,
A wine that can take my mind off things and just focus on the wine in the glass. So either a wine I know will be engrossing to me. Probably a wine I saved for a celebratory occasion but never opened, or a wine I have been highly curious to try.
Exercise after a tough day at work - walk, run, take a bike ride, etc. Then, after the endorphins have worked their magic and you’ve cleaned up, pour yourself a glass of something that offers pleasure in taste and mysteries to ponder. Relax.
Champagne or an Old Fashioned. I used to enjoy a vodka “martini”
