What wine are you excited about?

There’s of course the obvious: grand cru burg, first growths, etc.

Beyond that, I think the wines that excite me the most are those that are memorable for some reason — visiting the site, a special occasion celebrated, or even just a random village wine in a little town in Italy that would never in a million years get exported (likely even beyond the village itself) that just cultivate a sense of place and time. That and Krug.

Lately I have a crush on Domaine Fourrier.
The Gevrey villages is a tasty benchmark. The aux Moines is my favorite (cause’ I’ve yet to lay my lips on the seldom seen clos St. Jacques).

Other producers (Burgundy) that get my pulse racing:
Lafouge Auxey - great stuff,
Clavelier Chambolle 1er orveaux
Berthaut Gerbet
Tollot Beaut Corton Bressandes
Joseph Drouhin Chambolle 1er blend. Try the 20, skip the (too big) 19’
Audoin Marsannay, I like Favieres best but good juice across the board.
Henri Magnien
Groffier Chambolle 1er Hauts Doix - liked the 19 a lot (ymmv)

Vosne Beaux Monts, when/if I can even find it…

I’m also very much on the Fourrier hype train. I own more Fourrier than any other producer. Looks like we are in a similar place. I also love the CAM, but have yet to try the CSJ. I have some CSJ but my oldest vintage is 2 bottles of the 2014… Really excited to open one of these some day. Hoping to make it to their 15th Birthday…

For me, my favorite wines, esp. reds, are wines with age on them so I very rarely am most excited about drinking “new finds” as much as I am old favorites.

The wines I get most excited about drinking are thus:

Truchot,
Mugneret-Gibourg
Dublere
Chandon des Briailles
1999 and 2010 red Burgundies (after last week, I might add 2007 to this list)
Ramonet
Bernard Moreau
Bouchard Meursault Perrieres and Genevreieres
2014 white Burgundies
Chateau Pradeaux
Leoville las Cases
Haut Brion
von Schubert
Reinhold Haart
JJ Prum
Taittinger
Dom Ruinart
really old Ridge Zin

For wineries newer to me, I would add:

Delamotte
Chateau D’Issan
Moreau-Naudet
Armand Heitz
Mount Eden

I’ve had more misses than hits while exploring the new generation of champagne producers doing microvinification and zero dosage. I’m curious to taste as much as I can but the style isn’t really in my wheelhouse.

That DdT Empreintes… wow. Among the best champagnes I’ve had in some time. I liked the Acacia too but this was next level.

Fourrier doesn’t fully close down, and while the 14 CsJ is somewhat tight on the palate, it’s extremely pretty on the nose. I did a dinner last year with every vintage of CsJ and Griotte from 2006 to 2018 and it’s the most recent vintages (other than 2017) that I would wait on.
It’s not a wine I’d hesitate too much to open.

That’s good feedback thanks. Maybe I’ll break down a bit earlier

2014 is where my Fourrier collection starts to get a bit deeper. I’ve got 3 bottles of Champeaux, 2 bottles of CSJ and 1 Griotte. I’ll probably crack a Champeaux next year for its 10th birthday. Any recent experience with that wine?

Not the Champeaux; last one I had was the 2017.

A bottle from Ployez-Jacquemart last night made me look back at my list of Champagnes that I’m excited about. I’d mistakenly left them out. I love their Granit and their Leisse d’Harbonville.
Cheers

Yep, Seth tends to pick a little earlier than others and his wines are all crystalline and energetic with great acidity. I commented awhile back that the 2019 X-Omni was a riesling geek’s chardonnay.

  • 2019 Morgen Long Chardonnay X Omni - USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Eola - Amity Hills (6/2/2021)
Decanted for 2 hours before having my first taste, and continued to follow over the evening. Consumed from a Grassl Cru glass.

This is a riesling lover’s chardonnay right here. Beautifully complex nose of key lime pie, orange zest, custard, almond meal, wood spice, and steel. The wine is firm and has excellent tension, with electric acidity, and great dry extract. Persistent lime and orange cream citrus notes linger over a bed of chalky minerals, which I’m still tasting minutes after my last sip.

Superb juice. In a word, electric! (95 points)

Brian, I’m curious, what do you mean by this? Is it a comment on the acid profile, or something else?

Acid profile and generally a more focused and refreshing set of wines with great minerality. There is fruit but it isn’t opulent/lush.

I cannot believe I am saying this, but I cannot wait to taste an Argentinian Malbec that I bought recently. It was recommended by a close friend, and I purchased it in magnum, and it’s due to arrive in a week.

The wine is 1994 Weinert Tonel Unico No 111 Malbec Mendoza. I remember the 1977 Weinert fondly, and this special bottling from 1994 is supposed to be a throwback.
