The talk of big and clumsy and Napa-like is really out of touch for what has been happening in Argentina for a long time. I guess old stereotypes die hard. There are still plenty of those made but they’re mostly relics. The style for many years has been for fresher and less oak. With that said, I drank probably no more than 1% Malbec there as I prefer the cab franc and pinot noir for reds and also drank a lot of white and sparkling. Almost everything I drank was between 12-13%, on avg lower than most everywhere in France and Italy today.
Another I would feel confident in recommending to break the misconception is Riccitelli’s Old Vines Malbec even though I never tried it. I say this after drinking his other wines like the Old Vines Bastardo and other varieties from his other lines and the style is pretty consistent. Really nice wines.
