Sierra Lima Alfa, Corte de Blancas - high elevation Argentina

A good reminder of why it’s important to keep an open mind. 70% Sauvignon Blanc, 30% Torrontes. Two grapes I normally avoid. From Salta, in the far north or the country, which I tend to avoid because of heat and resultant high alcohol. But this is quite pretty, restrained, and elegant. Super classy wine. Clocking in at 13.4% alc it is surprisingly light on the palate but filled with all kinds of interesting things to sniff out if you want to concentrate on it. Not at all what one would expect from two varieties that normally kick off quite a bit of aromatics. Very subtle white flowers and minerals. It glides down the throat with ease if you just want to throw it back. People don’t often think about the word delicate when it comes to Argentina but that’s what you get here.

Grown organically at two different vineyards with crazy heights of 7,800 and 8,500 feet in “stony with sand” soils. Fermented in tank and then 30% goes into barrique for a year before bottling. Ambient yeast. Only 2,500 bottles made per vintage. It’s somewhat of a darling among local somms here in Buenos Aires so I doubt any gets exported. Nice little bodega making wines in a clean style that they claim “as natural as possible with ambient yeast and without wood.” About $37
