I hope that was okay. Not my fave vintage and not sure how well we did with that bottling that weird year.
I opened a 2021 Patricia Green Cellars Estate Vineyard Wadensvil Block that just arrived with my spring club shipment.
Translucent garnet in color, fanning out to a pink and clear rim. Raspberries, slightly medicinal Rainier cherries, crushed autumn foliage, and baking spices. A touch of lavender and top soil with more vigorous aeration in the glass, the former becoming more prominent and sexy with time in the glass. Mouthcoating and expansive, yet delicate on the palate, with supple tannins, juicy acidity, and finishing on a core of earthy minerality. Not much persistence of fruit on the finish other than some subtle raspberry and plum notes, but this has a certain appeal to it that makes me come back for sip after sip.
I am partial to this block and this bottling is my favorite of the limited number that exist (2015-2019, 2021 and 2023). I think it is still wound up pretty well and has a longer journey than many of our 2021s to get to where it isn’t clenched. I just tasted the much more textured and ethereal 2023 and picked the barrels for the epic 2024 today.
This block is super special to me and I dig the 2021. Glad it performed.
So is 2023 no longer the best vintage ever for PGC?
Opened a 2023 Freedom Hill, Wadensvil today. Decanted, with half the bottle back into a 375ml (for tomorrow) and the other half, still in decanter, back into the 60 degree cellar for three hours. Retrieved the decanter and poured the wine back into the bottle (that I’d rinsed out earlier). I’ve been sitting here contemplating this wine’s beautiful nose for 15 minutes or so. Plenty of intense, perfumed fruit on the nose, but some savory and “meaty” notes (reminding me of a roasted pork). Just a beautiful nose. Finally took a taste. Oh man, this stuff is delicious. I think I’m going to really like the 2023s, if this is any sort of fair representation of what’s in the bottles.
If you have some of these, give one a peek - I suspect you’ll be happy you did.
After opening a couple 2023 pinots, both from PGC and others, I think I’m going to wait until the fall to try more.
Advised.
Glad this worked out. Terry asked me across some bottles he has what I thought when I tasted through all the 2023s with Audrey Frick what might be drinking well enough now to take a look at. This was my top recommendation. All the wines will benefit from lots of time but I love the texture of this wine so I thought it would be aomwthing that would be pleasurable in the here and now even if its top end is a long ways off.
You weren’t wrong!
Can I ask the stupid question why aside from the Reserve, no '23s are on sale on your site? Are they only available for club members at this point?
We are still selling down a handful of 2022s at this point. Club members and/or futures buyers would have some access to certain 2023s but none are truly for open sale at this point. We are nearly wound down on 2022s and it’s not like we wait around until the last 2022 is sold but we’re not quite were to a general release point yet. The 2020 vintage really threw our release schedule into turmoil and we still haven’t completely recovered from that massive disruption at this point. Part of a slightly delayed and more uniform release of the 2023s is born of the desire to try and get back to a more historically normal sort of schedule.
Sucks I know, but it makes sense in the long run.
I’ll add that my four different PGC 2023s sitting in my cellar were purchased as part of Jim’s “futures” program offering a year or so ago. The PGC’s Spring 2024 Newsletter discusses the seven different 2023 vintage wines that were offered:
Estate Coury Clone;
Freedom Hill Wadensvil Clone;
Hyland Coury Clone;
La Belle Promenade Ghost Barn Block;
Lillie’s;
Weber; and,
Wind Ridge.
And . . . just like that! PGC’s 2024 “futures” offering is up on the PGC website!!
Order in:
6 x 2024 Estate Vineyard, Bonshaw Block;
6 x 2024 Estate Vineyard, Wadensvil Block;
3 x 2024 Ridgecrest Vineyard; and,
3 x 2024 Weber.
What are you going to drink the other eleven months of the year until the 2025 release?
Opened another 2021 last evening - simply delicious!!
I need to live long enough (and not be made the object of a conservatorship ) to purchase the 2025s when they come out, as that will be the “birth year” wine for my one and only grandchild. After that . . . all options are on the table!
This just arrived in my email about an hour ago from MacArthur. Not to cause you trouble with them, but you might mention that more than three hours notice would make attending easier.
Ha! I’ll tell Andy he has dissatisfied customers!!
I thought today was appropriate to pull a 2018 Barrel #9. It’s in the decanter now and will report later, but the initial impression was it seems gassy and grumpy. Maybe the homemade Gyros will help…
