I’d define it in a similar way Chris. Specifically struck match and smoke were most prominent in this instance but I think saline and bitter minerals were present also. Hmmm…
That is really interesting and I can’t dispute your personal experience. Yet I think it you lined up a Walter Scott, Morgan Long, Goodfellow, and Kelley Fox, one of them would not be like the others!
Perhaps Justin’s suggestion is closer to the mark - that some “slipped in.” I have never heard of KF aiming for the reductive style.
The 2019 hyland is beautiful. Thanks for the rec everyone. Have about 1/4 left that i will finish tonight.
I had the exact same experience and especially loved the satin texture. Wish I would have bought (lots) more.
My experience with KF wines is limited as I’m newer to the hobby, but a 2023 Dux Chard that Jonathan poured for me at the winery in May 2025 was showing reductive aromas like matchstick and smoke. It’s the only white I bought that day and it was primarily because of the reductiveness.
Luckily I have 7 bottles left! I snagged a bunch on berserker day a few years back.
I think i have 12 or 13 left?
. Loaded up on BD a few years ago lol.
Probably the Goodfellow ![]()
(Oh, wait. You mean not showing some reduction. Ours would have some, but probably still be the outlier.)
Reduction is a super complex conversation.
And to what Justin said, many producers don’t aim for it but still have a bit. Some do aim for it and amounts vary. Especially wine by wine.
Our 2022 Temperance Hill Chardonnays are quite reductive. Most of the 2019s are just a little bit.
But this a KF wines thread, and I think some of Kelley’s wines have a bit but it doesn’t seem like it’s a focus.
I’ve always enjoyed the work she does from Durant and think there are reductive notes (the minerality, and some non-fruit character) but she rarely seems to have very much reduction.
Just an absolutely fantastic wine. I tasted 2019s with Kelley and Jim a few years ago and the Royal Ann and Jim’s Ridgecrest bottlings were spectacular. Among the best young Wilamette Valley Oinot Noirs I have ever tasted.
The durant chard is marine soil? Any impact there? Last KF Durant i had was 2019 last year, honey and apples on the nose, not a very reductive style, but lovely.
Durant Chardonnay is primarily volcanic soils and becomes a bit transitional(Bellpine) as you move through Raven and Heron.
Bellpine is a silty clay loam mixed soil that has quite a bit of volcanic material in it and some sedimentary as well. It’s actually good for growing and the vines there can have quite a bit of vigor, but they tend to set well and ripen in a more balanced way than the Chardonnay further up the hill. Raven and Heron are right at the foot of the hill, where the cool air pools and also tend to be sheltered from the hottest part of the day as the sun moves behind the hill.
I tend to like Chardonnay from either high or low, and less from the middle where the more direct sun exposure on the slopes tends to ripen very quickly.
Wish I would have had that foresight
Hopefully, you picked up the comparable deal two weeks ago on BD17?
I bought a mixed case including GV’s and Rieslings
I did buy 3 more royal ann too.
I need to mention the superior customer service from Jonathan recently.
I bought a mixed six pack in November, unfortunately I was shipped another customer’s sixer. A quick call to Jonathan and he made sure my order shipped immediately and he gifted me the shipment I received. It was primarily Pinot Blanc and they have been excellent.
Great wines and great service!
I always really liked Dustin, but Jonathan has been just fantastic as his replacement. I have had similar experiences to yours. It just makes me want to buy more… ![]()
No kidding! One and a half cases since then, including a case of reds and I’m not buying much reds anymore!?
And now you know how good the Pinot Blancs are! Those are truly my favorite KF whites and perhaps my favorite Oregon whites.
Don’t let OR Pinot Blanc pass you by!
2024 Haden Fig the other night rocked.
