Cool. I usually don’t add the syrups to my Berliner Weisse because they add sweetness and I like 'em tart, so this wine sounds like it could be a perfect replacement.
I have only tasted a few of Kelly’s wines and really enjoyed them. The secondary market to pick up bottles with some age seems to be very thin. How criminal would it be to open a 2023 Maresh Liminal if I have a few?
I would be careful. A couple of years ago I thought there would be no harm in opening one little bottle of 2019 Mirabai and then I opened all but one over the next couple of months. Now I’ve been clinging on to that last bottle for years.
Go for it. No harm with multiple bottles. Just follow it over the next few weeks. Trust me…
I purposefully buy the Mirabai as a KF cellar defender because it drinks so damn well young. But it can also age (a excellent 2012 recently being case in point).
I agree with James that you should go for it. The 2023s should not have started shutting down yet and her wines are wonderful in their youth. I am not sure about the several weeks plan. I would end up finishing the bottle the night it was opened.
2022 Barbi Pinot Blanc - always among my favorite of any OR whites. Aged in acacia. Given how the Loire keeps getting baked, this might end up replacing Chenin Blanc for me.
Old label, first year with cork post-screw top. This is still doing nicely at almost ten years old. I continue to be torn about these as I love them so much on release. I still can’t say if they are better or just different with some age.
I have the same question for these. I typically split them, half I store and half I drink within 1-2 years. At this point, the oldest I have is 2019, so I’m getting close to checking back in. If you had to make a choice, would you age to 10+ years or drink on release and save the space?
Good question. I have always treated these as KF cellar defenders while loading up on SVD BD deals for the longer term. That said, I recently had a 2012 (screwcap) that was really tasty while showing obvious and positive development. But if I had to choose, I’d still stick to my original approach of drinking them young and ageing the SVDs.
I had my first Kelley Fox wines over the past month having located them in Japan. I’ve greatly enjoyed them - although fascinated would be a more specific word to sum up thus far. I’ve a 2016 Maresh Vineyard Pinot Noir in the cellar to try next and will keep exploring from there. Thanks to this thread for starting me on this course!
2023 Kelley Fox Wines Chardonnay Willamette Valley
Pale lemon appearance. Quite aromatic medium+ nose. Primary aromas of lemon, lemon peel, a little stone fruit with white peach, white flowers, and some subtle tropical notes of mango & papaya (so pretty much all the main white wine fruit cluster groups!). Secondary malolactic aromas of cream noticeable. Some subtle reductive aromas of struck match and smoke add complexity to the bright fruit. On the palate, dry, high acid, medium alcohol, medium body, medium+ flavour intensity, medium+ finish that’s dominated by savoury notes but also iron minerality (which I rarely, if ever, remember using to describe Chardonnay). I’m also left with a slight salted plum, Aji (horse mackerel) sashimi minerality on the lips as the wine evolved. Upon opening , the notes on the finish seemed a little bitter and unbalancing of the wine. However, this changed after an hour or so of opening / drinking - I’m not sure whether that was the wine opening up or my palate acclimatising to the wine’s character. Light, elegant, and delicious.…although not what I’d call crowd pleasing. I find it hard to categorise this. An intriguing mix of bright fruit but simultaneously very savoury, particularly on the finish. I love it….even if (or because) it took me a while to come to that conclusion.
2023 Kelley Fox Wines Pinot Noir Mirabai
Pale ruby. Intriguing medium intensity nose of raspberry, smoke, red plum, red cherry, rhubarb, earth. A little cooked fruit character adds complexity. High acid. Medium, fine-grained, velvety tannin. Lovely bit of structure. Medium alcohol. Medium- body. Medium+ flavor intensity. On the palate, the sweet, juicy strawberry is eventually replaced by transparent terroir driven iron, iodine, earthy notes. Very good quality and drank very well over 3 days. A lovely counterpoint to the more brooding nature of the Yabby Lake - very impressed and looking forward to trying some of the single vineyards.

Here are a couple of photos of Black Raspberry growing on my property. We have also planted some nursery plants. They fruit on the second year canes before dying back. They are low yield and can be a pain to harvest due to the thorns, so I imagine that the berries are pretty expensive to purchase compared to grapes or blueberries. In the second picture, you can see the beginning of bud break on January 18th. Here in the central Puget Sound region, we have yet to have anything that would be mistaken for winter.
Thanks for the insight from your own experience. That sounds like a miserable fruit to work with for any commercial purpose, no less making alcohol.
