That does seem a bit weird, but once in London we were in an Indian restaurant in Soho with a pretty good wine list, and they recommended a Chandon de Briailles SLB. Since then if we have something with moderate heat I’ve tried a wide variety of red wines. I don’t have enough Rayas for that experiment, though.
12x Stein Riesling Feinherb Weihwasser (love this wine, we drink it often so doubled down and bought another case to be sent to storage)
6x Stein Rose Trocken 2021
3x Stein Rose Secco 2021
1b Jonas Dostert Chardonnay Cremant
1b Mousse et Fils ‘Terre D’Illite’ Brut 2017
Also just bought 19 Cormiers! Have you ever tasted the cuvee? Only had the base bottles (15 and 16) which I loved. Also a big fan of Dolomies whites, though they often requires a bit time in my opinion.
Myself:
Mixed 6-pack of 2021 Kabinett’s from Hofgut Falkenstein.
I’ve had it a few times in as many years and to me it hasn’t evolved all that much in terms of tertiary development. Tastes fresh, if a little to the fat and doughy side! Perhaps some of that dosage is keeping things in check? Richness is a great word to describe the wine, without quite reaching the point of confection.
The first time I had this was in 2013 and I can say it really has not budged that much since release. Not that this is a bad thing because I prefer my Champagne a little fresher. I agree that it is super tasty and rich without being like confection. There are some tropical/exotic notes of mandarin orange and lychee too. This has always been a crowd pleaser type of Champagne. One of the folks who I drank this with over the weekend told me that he remembered me bringing this to a wine dinner many years ago and his first thought was that I must have hit hard times because I am now bringing Piper to wine dinners instead of Krug or DP. Then he told me he enjoyed it so much that he bought a 6-pack the next day.
Looking back at my purchase history, I bought 96 bottles going back to 2013 and I have 9 left. I can think of very few bottles of Champagnes that have given such great pleasure over the years, consistently, without any special preparation - just pop and pour and it is ready to go. '06 Comtes is one of the few wines I have consumed more of than this, that comes to mind as being such a consistent performer, as well as '08 DP up until the past year. I had both the '06 and '08 Rare the couple of days preceding this last bottle of '02 and they just are not in the same league. I concluded this is most likely my last chance to reload so I did.
There is one other wine that I put in the category of huge crowd-pleaser that people were shocked when I served it to them for the first time and that is '95 Charles Heidsieck BdM. I had a great run with that bottling, but unfortunately it is past its prime for my palate. I recently picked up some of the '04 after seeing Warren rave about it.
