An impulse buy that I semi-regret - 2016 Bonneau du Martray Corton-Charlemagne
Donât feel bad. I bought 6 bottles La Rogerie Champagne only to learn Iâve Previously purchased 6 bottles. Oh well.
LOL - I bought a couple bottles of La Rogerie from Thatchers a few days ago. Did not regret that purchase though.
This past weekend I received an invite to a 50th B-day party happening in January 2023. Guests are requested to bring great bottles from the 70âs. I donât have a lot of 70âs in my cellar except for California, so I was hoping to find some DP, especially '73. Winebid had a '73 in this past weekâs auction but the fill was not great, so I did not bid. I had to stop by a wine shop yesterday for a pick up and while I was snooping around the wine room I saw a 3-pack OWC of DP '64/'73/'80. I asked to see the bottles and the fills levels were pretty good. '64 is one of the best bottles of Champagne I have ever had and it also has sentimental value so I thought that was a bonus. I donât recall having the '80 before and I am not sure what to expect. The white paper label on the OWC has what appears to be a date of 09/06/01 and it does have P2 on it. There is a tasting note on CT for a '80 Oeno with a disgorgement date of '99 so maybe this is a P2? The OWC lid does say Recently Disgorged. The bottle label however appears to be a standard green shield label. There is a pamphlet inside describing each bottle but no mention of disgorgement. Hopefully they all drink well.
Color me envious, as Iâve never had DP from the '60s. FWIW I had a 1980 original disgorgement last year that was significantly younger tasting than a 1973 and 1978. From my notes: ârich and dominated by honey and toffee notes; pillowy on the palate, and then finishes clean and sharp and linear - much more so than the 1973 and 1978; no cream, cocoa, or mushroom notes to speak of; I personally prefer the 1978 for the complexity; good plusâ
A few 2021 Vollenweider. I shouldnât be buying any more wine - especially german - but itâs his last vintage and I have been cellaring his wines since the 2001 vintage (drank the 02 Goldgrube âReilerâ spatlese last night - outstanding and it paired quitemwell with the yellow gazpacho I served alongside).
I got some too. Goldgrube Kabi and Spat.

â78 is really good.
A lonely singleton of 2019 von Schubert Abtsberg Kabinett Fuder 33 (VDP auction wine).
Why just one?
Thatâs what was available.
Certainly the only legitimate reason to only buy one of these. I saw it too and almost bid. Bet itâs awesome.

That is an encouraging note on the '80, thanks. I have had original disgorgement of the '73 before and it was definitely mature, so should be interesting to see how the later disgorgement is showing. Unfortunately I have not had the '78 before, but with 2 thumbs up from you and Jayson, I will be looking for one.
6 pack of 2020 Tensley Colson at $32 a bottle.
2x 2019 Taupenot-Merme Mazoyeres-Chambertin, $270 at Envoyer. Yes, it used to be a lot cheaper like everything else but this is as low as Iâve seen for recent vintages.
