Served blind to my tasting group, this was very well received. I did still find it a bit reductive, even on night two when I had the last glass. I just think of it as hommage a Coche. ![]()
Was that the 4/24 disgorgement?
-Al
Yes
We opened that as well recently. It’s definitely still a bit reductive (and I’m happy to equate to the sparkling version of Coche!). We enjoyed the bottle quite a lot and it’s been really wonderful to see the sparkling wines growing in the bottle!
Gonna go cook up some
here in a bit, but for now am enjoying a few glasses of this delicious 2013 Goodfellow Whistling Ridge PN. I suspect it has many glorious years ahead of it, but it’s really very nice right now ![]()
Bottle buddies!
Edit to add a note:
2013 Whistling Ridge Pinot Noir
Note from night two, bottle had a generous glass taken from it the night before and then recorked and put in the kitchen fridge overnight. This is a very pretty wine that is great at the table, medium minus body with bright acid and a bit of pleasant rusticity that makes you eager to come back for another sip. On the nose rose water, strawberry, woodsy tones, a bit of Goodfellow amaro spice. On the palate lithe and elegant, though there is quite a bit of fine grained albeit firm tannin. Flavors largely follow through from the nose, lots of detail and delineation, lovely acidity, mid high tannnin, moderate finish. Plenty of gas in the tank, but drinking well.
Okay I bought and have a pile of Marcus and Megan’s pinots from 2013 to 2019 but I stopped buying after the 19 release because I’m old and can’t keep buying wines that need years to come around and these delicious wines do need time!
For my palate my favorite are the WR vineyard bottles especially the 16 which was the first wines I tried from Goodfellow kind of a first love kind of thing.
Anyways I stumbled across a 19 Lewman which from memory can be delicious when young and tonight it was beautiful! And really worked with what I will call braised Asian pork belly hot dogs lol. My apologies to Marcus for dropping off but I trust you have plenty of younger buyers for your fantastic wines! Hope all is well!
Oh and I have to say I can’t read a newspaper through this wine so is this really Pinot? ![]()
Great to hear from you Scott, and the pairing looks fantastic!
Hi Scott,
it’s great to hear from you, and those hot dogs look amazing!
I always think of you when I see the Whistling Ridge Heritage No. 7 bottles. No worries about dropping off, our stuff does take a while to come around. I think that one of the unintended benefits of the sparkling program is that it doesn’t take years for them to be good…though they do still seem to want a couple of years after disgorging
.
I’m glad that you enjoyed the 2019 Lewman! Just fyi, the 2018s, specifically the Whistling Ridge wines, are beginning to open up as well.
Be well and I hope you are enjoying the Fall!
Marcus, I opened a 2019 Fir Crest this past week and enjoyed it over two evenings. It was wonderful the first half, that first evening, and just as wonderful that second evening. I was curious about the '19s, saw I had a couple of Fir Crest, and so threw caution to the wind!
But my curiosity also was due, in part, to the fact that I’ve got a handful of 2018 Fir Crest bottles [edit: just checked, and confirmed I’ve also got some Whistling Ridge and Temperance Hill 2018s] sitting in the cellar. Any recent experience(s) with the '18 Fir Crest? Thanks!! ![]()
Hi Terry,
We opened the 2018 Fir Crest a few months ago working through some of the wines from the last decade. It’s definitely enjoyable but was not as ready for business as the 2019 was (to me).
The 2018 Whistling Ridge was really enjoyable but the vintage is just opening up in the past few months. I have enjoyed the 2019s more lately but think the 2018s are definitely entering the window.
As much as I love Marcus’s pinot noirs, every year some friends and I buy a few cases of his “crushable” whites (and the rosé) to drink by the lake in Maine. Tonight we are finishing the last Field Blend of the season while the sun goes down all too quickly before 7pm. Love these wines year in and year out.
Durant Vyd BdB and 2015 Whistling Ridge Heritage #4
Both much as my prior notes.
Durant BdB. Still my favorite by a long shot of the sparklers. On the nose this is a cherry almond croissant and a lemon squeeze. On the palate medium bodied, bright acidity, longish finish with tons of mouth coating mineral grip. Still outstanding! <edit: CT says this is my 10th bottle of this wine over two cuvées.>
2015 WR Heritage. Drinking beautifully as prior. On the nose, woodsy and spicy tones over ripe strawberry and cherry fruit. On the palate, silky medium body, medium+ acidity, moderate but resolving tannins. Tons of dark toned spicy fruit on the palate and a long layered finish. Superb.
Same! I only have one left.
Same, but luckily I have another 6 pack coming!
I kinda want to visit in November and take full advantage of my Wine Check.
Wait for the next iterations with more reserve wine and 3yrs sur latte. So so good you won’t regret backing up the truck.
