No, it’s not crazy at all. I have that thought semi-frequently when I am tasting that wine as well.
Max, based on my limited experience opening Goodfellow PNs, this seems comfortably in the middle of Goodfellow PNs I open within a year or two of release and that 2007 Matello I had a year or so ago. That said, it’s just so full of everything. The perfumed nose was just so generous upon opening, and about three glasses/two hours in the palate caught right up and stayed right with it. I have much more experience with those PGC PNs from around 2004 through 2013, and this 2015 Fir Crest is showing, especially on the nose, some hints or bits and pieces of what I get, age-wise, with those older PGCs. If you’ve got a few, I think you’d really enjoy opening one. And, as suggested, I suspect it will be really nice with some additional years. ![]()
I picked those 2018 Fir Crest Goodfellow PNs up at both Supermarket Liquor and Pringle’s in Fort Collins. But it was a few years back. I’ve been to Supermarket since then and I don’t recall whether they had any more recent vintages of any Goodfellow, but as of at least six months ago they had a few different PGC PNs (the 2023 FH blend, the 2024 Reserve and I think the 2021 Marine Sedimentary or Chehalem Mountain Vineyard, I think). Pringles a few years back also had a handful of 2018 Goodfellow Durant Chardonnay bottles (I think I cleaned them out and now have opened all but one or two I have left). But I haven’t been down to either store (or any wine shop) in quite some time.
Sadly only 1 bottle, Ill probably give it a few more year, doesn’t sound like it’ll hurt!
2017 Goodfellow Family Cellars Durant Vineyard. Yet another 2017 Goodfellow drinking very nicely these days. Generous, perfumed nose, and follows up all happy in the mouth. What a party. ![]()
I’ve got some older Durants coming this fall, so wanted to check in on one with at least a bit of age and, hopefully coming out of any slumber it may have enjoyed. Last year or so I think I’ve had some other 2017s, including the Berserker Cuvee and the Block Eleven, Fir Crest, and they’ve been just wonderful. Didn’t recall whether I had opened a Durant, but figured I’d be happy if I did. ![]()
No picture, but opened 2023 Goodfellow Pinot noir Berserker cuvée.
This was my second to last bottle from a case I bought and thought this was drinking really well. First night was a bit muted, even with 5 hours of it being open. Second night (tonight) was much more open with bright cherry / cranberry notes with good acidity. It’s hard to keep my hands off these bottles!
Thanks for the note. I only have one bottle of No. 6, which makes it hard to decide when to open it. It sounds like most anytime would be fine though.
What are you all grabbing from the Goodfellow Whistling Ridge offer?
I went for:
2 x 2017 Heritage 10
6 x 2025 WR Blanc (Field blend)
2 x 2024 WR PN
2 x 2024 WR Pumphouse PN
Wish I could go for more but I’m trying to slow my roll.
X3 blanc de blancs
X3 blanc de noirs
X6 whistling ridge blanc field blend
Really looking forward to trying the new sparklers
6x Whistling Ridge Blanc
5x Richard’s Cuvee Chardonnay
4x 2024 Whistling Ridge Vineyard Pinot Noir
2x 2024 Long Acre Whistling Ridge Vineyard Pinot Noir
2x Heritage 24
1x Heritage 10
1x 2017 Whistling Ridge Chardonnay
1x Whistling Ridge 2015-17 mini-vertical
Fall can’t get here soon enough.
I’m digging all the love for the WR Blanc/The Crack. It’s delicious year in/year out.
Hi Frank,
I think you can probably open the No. 6 any time. It’s drinking quite well, especialy with a short decant or giving it some time to breath.
Same, the vineyard produces so many great wines but the Blanc is always just so delicious. On a tropical desert island, which Whistling Ridge wine would I take? Hmm…
Always the bubbles, no contest.
Tropical island? I think the riesling for me. But I’m not sure I’ve had the field blend yet. My consumption data shows we’ve had one bottle of 2020 WR Blanc. Is that the same field blend? In any case I have half a case each of the 24 and 25 on the way this fall, so I’ll be able to get a better handle on this critical decision.
This third of three in the series, I went with:
3 x the Whistling Ridge Blanc de Blancs “Usagi Yojimbo”;
2 x the 2024 Whistling Ridge Vineyard Pinot Noir;
2 x the 2024 Long Acre, Whistling Ridge Vineyard Pinot Noir; and,
1 x the 2024 Heritage No. 24, Whistling Ridge Vineyard Pinot Noir.
Like others, I’ve got a bunch of stuff coming this fall
, including these three Whistling Ridge magnums:
1 x 2024 Heritage No.24, Whistling Ridge Vineyard Pinot Noir;
1 x 2024 Long Acre, Whistling Ridge Vineyard Pinot Noir; and,
1 x 2024 Whistling Ridge Vineyard Pinot Noir. ![]()
@Marcus_Goodfellow Please remind me, does each wine broadly speaking or, more specifically,their separate disgorgements get unique names (Usagi Yojimbo, etc.) ? Trying to figure out how much detail (base vintage, disgorgement date, etc.) I need to put into CT when I log the wines. Also, would love to see some sweet Pokemon style cards for all these individual wines/names coming online through the sparkling program ![]()
Hi Ted,
Each individual wine gets a separate family name. Different disgorgements will be the same name. We’re allowed tomout the disgorgement date on the label. TTB does not allow multiple vintages to be stated.
So Usagi Yojimbo will be on this current disgorgement, and also on the disgorgement of the last 80 cases we are holding back. The second disgorgement will have a “Tardive” or “V.P.” label as it’s set for 5 years on lees before disgorging, but it will still be Usagi Yojimbo.
Though if we roll the pokemon style cards out, maybe we’ll have to go with “Legendary” or “Mega” ![]()
And thank you to everyone who ordered this summer! I hope the extra emails were enjoyable for the information and background on the vineyards!
