What Goodfellow/Matello are you drinking?

2024 Goodfellow Family Cellars Chardonnay Berserker Cuvée Durant Vineyard

BRIGCAMPBELL WROTE: April 7, 2026 -I’m a sucker for anything that has a green hue to it and this one definitely does. There’s a lot of minerality throughout the wine. Medium acidity and yellow fruited. Outstanding and know it’ll only get better with a little time.

Needs air but this is very nice. Taut red berries with earth and stem on the nose. Medium light on the palate with lighter cherry, amaro, spice, supple earth. Long and structured finish.

Excellent quality. Leans on the elegant side, to my preference this could use a bit more fruit power and concentration. Plenty to expand upon over time.

That was a fun little surprise. Went to a small restaurant in Matthews, NC. Nice small local place, nothing special. On the list, '22 Goodfellow Willamette Valley. Nice crunchy fruit, awesome savory streak in the mid palate, and a pleasant finish. Very good stuff.

Should have looked at my prior notes and others. This is super tight. Lots to like here but would definitely hold

Almost 6yrs from my last bottle, and it's still wound pretty tight. Pretty shy nose and it seemed to actually shut down with air. Palate is dense and tightly wound with fresh acidity. Mostly crunchy red fruit but there's an intriguing violet lifted character. Quite dense and tannic, but amazingly long penetrating finish. This really may be something special in 5+yrs, just not for drinking now. Unfortunately my last bottle. 92+ (92 points)

I wasn’t going to open one of these so soon, but after seeing the notes above, I had to try one. Gave it three hours in the decanter and nursed it over five hours. Was very enjoyable from the get go, but opened and gained complexity until the very end of the bottle. It’s a far more serious wine than I was expecting. Real intensity, texture, and length. I may buy two cases on BD 18.

Agree with this sentiment. I had already done some gifting/trades and am now wishing I was a little more greedy lol

Strawberry and melon. Nice and fruity. Very pretty pink color. Has good weight, almost plump, but is very refreshing anyway. Very different at different temps, so find a sweet spot. I liked this best around 55deg. 5+10+17+8= 90 (90 points)

Decanted for 4 hours in the fridge. Inspired by prior note to also take one for the team.

Pomegranate and bright red cherry underpinned by black tea. Elegant lighter red berries on the palate, subtle spice and savory tones, but with fine tannins and a bead of acidity. Long finish showing off the structure and tea leaves.

This will age beautifully for at least 10+ years but can be approached now with extended air. If this is what the 24s are going to be like...oh man. (91 points)

2015 Whistling Ridge Heritage No. 4 Pinot Noir

Excellent again. Largely consistent with my prior note posted last July after visiting the winery, this is dominated by scents and flavors of spicebox, incense, earth, and sour cherry. The wine is lithe and elegant on the palate despite intense flavor and a long finish. There is still plenty of fine but grippy tannin; the acidity is moderate rather than moderate plus or plus as this wine would be in a cooler vintage. Main revision to my prior note is that, drinking this with dinner, the tannin and structural impact is reduced relative to a winery tasting where it was the 3d or 4th red wine with no food.

I think this will go 10 years and more without issue.

    Whistling Ridge BdB 3/2025 disgorgement.
Quickly popped and poured a glass before stopping for overnight in fridge.
Golden straw color, vinous mousse, gentle effervescence on palate. More concentrated than inaugural release.
Initial nose of citrus, lemon oil, some salty sea spray.
More concentrated with grilled lemon, some yeastiness, very fresh, great acid and minerally finish. Less stony and more fruit forward than last release.
This is great, and I expect it will be better after a night in the fridge. Went well with blackened salmon and avocado, the acidity really cut through all of that buttery richness.

Day 2 of WR BdB 3/2025 DG

That distinctively Goodfellow BdB nose came through with air, think river pebbles and chalk interwoven seemlessly with roasted pine nut. That salty citrus dominant nose had receded into the background.
Acidity has mellowed a little bit with some air. It’s like biting into a lemon curd filled-to-the-brim croissant that is drenched in lemon oil. Midpalate is supple and gentle, with more citrus coming out. 30s finish with that stony nutty aftertaste.

    Basically this shit bussin’.

had the new release of the Durant BDB and boy is that tasty. Very drinkable straight off opening. All the characteristics of Durant vineyard, and the Goodfellow chard in its flavor profile and nose. Felt very electric and alive. Might need to get a few more bottles of this!

I live here. What is the name of the restaurant?

Sante in Matthews. I live about a mile from it.

3-4 bottles per vineyard and vintage is my go to buying strategy. I can follow them for every 3-5 years. But that quickly fill up my sparkling fridge ugh.

Another Goodfellow opened too young. Well, I’ve got more at least.

Really needed a day in the fridge to come together more. Acidity is very lively and borderline too high, particularly on the backend and finish. Gives a rather lifted feeling to the fruit. There's certainly some black tea and herbs, maybe some freshly tilled soil. Think dark cherry and blue fruit.

This needs 10 years. Nowhere near ready. Hope the acid integrates and softens with time as for now it is pretty brazen. Not optimistic as I believe acid is constant through the aging curve.

Day 3 in fridge, last glass and a half: Acid has softened and integrated more. This is much more harmonious. Going to be really good in a lot of time. Typical of Goodfellow I suppose.

Inspired by the chatter on here, I opened one of the new Durant BdBs from this latest BerserkerDay and yep, there it is, that’s the stuff. I’ve registered my adoration for the first cuvee – particularly the second disgorgement of the first cuvee – many times on here, but this is right up there. Oddly, the first bottle I opened a few weeks back didn’t blow me away, but this second bottle is getting the job done.

Ultra chalky and mineral, intense citrus acidity, some unripe stone fruit, electric and alive on the palate with immense mouth coating grip and length. Stellar.

Originally intended for a Berserker event that I never made it to. Forgot I had it. Like finding money! Remarkable wine, and still so youthful. As Marcus told me in advance, this is more black fruited. Generally my lean is more red, but great wine is great wine and this was a pleasure to sit with! Should still perform well for 10-15 years, maybe best 2030-2035.

Hahaha. Chef Adam and Veronica are good friends. I’ll take credit for that placement in a roundabout way as I’m sure that I’ve shared Goodfellow bottles with them in the past…

Damn! That note is compulsive! (enough to make me want to go open a bottle)

    Thank you!
