What Goodfellow/Matello are you drinking?

I thought of opening 2021 Richard’s tonight - how was it showing for you?

Has anybody opened a 2012 Whistling Ridge PN lately? I’m thinking about opening one of my two bottles tomorrow night unless people think I would be better waiting longer? Any thoughts on how early I should open the bottle? Decant? (I typically don’t decant Goodfellow PN but just wondering.)

Popped it and poured a glass but only took a sniff and a sip. Nice right out of the gate, both very light yet also powerful at the same time. Hints of aged Goodfellow PN but I’m guessing the show will really start about 3 hours in.

Beserker Cuvee was serve blinded to the Noreetuh event last week. No one guessed Burgundy! I wish I had thought to bring my last couple bottles of 2018 Lewman Heritage in the blind - that would have been more bonkers.

Do you mean no one guessed Oregon? I was spitballing ripe CdN grand crus; someone suggested Bonnes Mares and I agreed that was a good guess! I never would’ve guessed Goodfellow as it showed more concentration of fruit than expected but it stood out to me among the five blinds that night (17 B-G Suchots, 04 Groffier Amoureuses, 17 Guillon Gevrey Perriere, 17 Berserker Cuvee, and 08 Lachaux Suchots).

The 2012 Whistling Ridge PN took about 4 hours after opening before I got the full blown aged experience and was frolicking in the autumn leaves despite it being springtime. What a wonderful bottle, except now I have no idea what I should do with my last bottle. I feel like it will hold and probably continue to develop for a while, but it’s drinking so well now I’m not sure if I should wait.

I think 2012 was the only vintage Marcus released wine under both the Matello and Goodfellow Family labels.

Hi Bill,

We had this last winter, and your description perfectly matches our experience.

More recently the 2011 Caprice (PB & PG) was in a surprisingly good place for a 15 year old white, and while good on PnP (green papaya and nectarines) it really hit the aged white phase after a day (oily texture, Alsatien, with a golden but oddly stony presence). We also opened a 2010 Field blend a year ago, and it was still in excellent shape. So you should have time to spare if you hold your last bottle a few years more.

We did small nottlings of Matello WV Pinot Noir in 2013 and 2014 (because the vintages were large) and the Field Blend was Matello through 2015.

That’s pretty amazing to hear Arian, it sounds like a great event and Noreetuh is such a great place.

It’s interesting to hear the Bonnes Mares call, that vineyard is the reason I have always been focused on producing more tannic Pinot Noirs. An early experience with a very old (1957) Bonnes Mares in 1996 was my benchmark wine for many years (and may still be). Seeing how tannic the young versions were left me seeking more and more tannins as time went by.

That wine is a favorite. We picked really quickly in 2012 as things were ripening very fast. The suppleness and fruit density of the vintage balances with the cooler, edgy nature of the vineyard really well.

It was my third year using 500L puncheons and the 2012 Heritage from Whistling Ridge and the vineyard designate were the two wines we focused on using them in.

Tried out a new-to-us seafood place yesterday, Pacific Catch, with another couple. Took along a NV Extra Brut to start things off and what a pleasure it was. From pupu and poke, to sushi, to barramundi, it was the perfect compliment. Only complaint is it wasn’t a magnum

Not to be left completely dry, we also opened a 2022 Tercero Clairette Blanche, which was another success. Was a nice meal, indeed.

The Blanc de Gris might have been a good match, too. Has a little spice.

Thanks for allowing me to be the prankster this year! The theme for the night was 2017 Burgundy and when I saw this at auction on Unicorn a few weeks ago, I knew I had to go for it. It definitely had more concentration of fruit and was super tasty. Aside from the grand cru guesses + Bonnes Mares, one person did say California. Loved hearing everyone’s guesses! Wouldn’t have been a Berserkers event if Goodfellow didn’t make an appearance

Jeff, thanks so much for the note and for taking the time to let the wine unfold. I an really high on 2023s but they’ll definitely need some patience. I’m glad you enjoyed this one so much!

That is awesome!

What are you all thinking about for the Goodfellow spring release? I went with:

2 x WV Extra Brut
6 x WR Field Blend
2 x 2023 Last Acre PN
2 x 2023 Bednarik PN

I almost went with all white just because our cellar is about 2/3 red but our drinking is now only about 1/2 red. But couldn’t resist those 4 bottles of PN.

Just three of the Bednarik for me. Loaded up on sparklers at BD and want to save powder and box space for the main 24 releases forthcoming.

I went with 3-each of the 2023 Last Acre PN and 2023 Bednarik PN. :smiling_face_with_three_hearts: :wine_glass:
