A wine that is drinking really well right now! For a wine 17 years old, the staining (or lack there of) on the cork foreshadowed good things to come. There was slight browning, but the sweet perfume of raspberry and black tea on the nose was inviting. Those fruit flavors carried into the palate with some spice and some chewy tannins on the finish. Just a lovely wine and a joy to drink.
Awesome. Just had two of these arrive from WineBid. Super excited to try one and glad it is drinking well.
Still reductive or starting to mellow out? I loved the 22.
Cracked the first of the 2015 Heritage No 4 Whistling Ridge that I ordered after tasting with Marcus over the summer. Lots of recent notes including my own from the summer and I don’t have much to add beyond the good descriptions in this thread. Delicious and impressive bottle of wine with a great balance of fruit and savory earth, amaro/bitters, and bright acid. It improved pretty substantially over the hour we had it open, had to pop and pour due to the circumstances but the wine still did great - just opened up a lot after 30-45 min. One little glass left for today.
I opened this bottle last night as well. Extreme reduction and kinda shutting down. Hold for another 1-2 years before checking in.
We drank our first 22 blanc de gris whistling ridge last night and enjoyed it quite a bit. It was fine from pnp, but really hit the mark about an hour after opening.
If you can resist, I found that the second half of a bottle is even better the next day.
I need to get into the habit of opening more bottles than we need to open so I can try this 2nd day thing.
Ha!! I was just thinking something similar today.

This wine really came out of its shell on day 3, day 4 it was firing on all cylinders
.
That’a great to hear, thank you for giving it the time to shine. Day one, the reduction is definitely dominant. Underneath is a really lovely wine, I’m really excited to see where this wine goes in a year or two.
I really do recommend the multi-bottle process. We’ve been digging into some Pinot Noirs from 2013-2019 lately, and all of them need at least a few hours, but most have simply been better the following day. 2017 Pumphouse was nice when we opened it, but still pretty wound up. By the next evening it was in great form. The 2019 Pumphouse was a bit more available on opening but over the next few days it really kept improving.
A bevy of Goodfellow Sparkling - All terrific. Durant BdB, WR BdB and Tsai BdN. In the last couple days. So glad Marcus & Megan took on this project especially given my age. Something about that Tsai BdN that really appeals to me. The power in those bubbles and body are just terrific. Temperance Hill on tap for tonight.
Also, either a Heritage #6, (15 Fir Crest), or 14 Durant from a 1.5L, or 15 Deaux Vert Syrah wil also be in tonight’s line-up!
Thank you Marcus and Megan!
Had the 2015 Heritage No. 6, Fir Crest Vineyard Pinot Noir last night with friends at a steakhouse.
Decanted for an hour before serving.
Everyone loved it. My friend (first time goodfellow drinker) said the following at the end of the night: “when you first poured it, it was very good. An hour later it was VERY VERY good. Two hours later it was OMG.”
Happy holidays to all ![]()
Merry Christmas Bill, and happy holidays to you and your family!
I’m really glad you’re enjoying the sparkling wines, and I hear you about how nice it is to be able to open them sooner rather than later. We just disgorged the remaining 2 bins (79 cases) of Tsai Blanc de Noirs. It’s one of my favorite bottlings, and a great reminder that we have so much still to explore here in the Willamette Valley. Taking the Pommard planting was a happy accident at the time, a kindness from the universe looking back at it now.
I hope you enjoy the wines this evening just as much!
Last night, Durant BdB and 2023 Whistling Ridge Riesling went well with the charcuterie and the halibut with green curry. My wife thought that the Riesling was particularly good with the halibut.
OK, this is pretty bad ass, lots of green apple peel and white and yellow fruits along with some florals. Been a big fan with the family this evening. Even over a Tribut Chablis.
Happy holidays to you and your family as well David! Thank you for sharing the No. 6 with your friends and family as well!
I really appreciate all the posts on giving the wines time to open, it’s still a very unusual concept for most wine drinkers. But over the years, many of my most prized experiences have been with wines where the last glass was the best, and the journey to that last glass was a complex experience.
I can’t express enough what this board and everyone who posts here have done for us and the wines.
