What does snowskin mooncake mean to you in a tasting note?

Saw this note in cellar tracker. 2000 Antinori Solaia : Toasty, ashy and a hint of snowskin mooncake. Very dark color, with grippy tannins. There’s sediments in this wine.

This just struck me as interesting and gave me a good chuckle. I enjoy these unusual notes in cellar tracker. When I googled this the first line was a recipe from Malaysia. These look beautiful and labor intensive, but I still have no idea what they might taste like. By coincidence, in about an hour, my son arrives for a visit. He is working in Malaysia and I haven’t seen him for 8 months. Really excited to see him and maybe he can fill me in about mooncakes!

Some regional snackfood?

I was thinking LSD or maybe magic mushrooms.

The same author used this twice: Tasting Notes - CellarTracker
Their profile lists them as being from Singapore.

I can’t say that I have ever tasted or smelled red bean paste in a wine, but perhaps if it was a more familiar experience for me? Mooncake - Wikipedia

It means… two bottles in a night and sometimes moving into a third, to explore new regions, is just too much. [berserker.gif]

Snow Skin Mooncake (recipe included): Snow Skin Mooncake (Chinese Crystal Mooncake) - Rasa Malaysia

A first step in the fusion of the Asian and Western linguistic and culinary palate maps?

I have prayed for years for a Zen influenced, minimalism loving wine scribe to arise out of the East and apply Japanese aesthetics to wine…

Sounds like it.

I got a great sense of the wine the moment I read that descriptor.

A.

Robert,
I saw that when I googled it. I hope you will make it soon and post a tasting note.

They taste like chicken.

You know, now that I think of it, wasn’t this one of Frank Zappa’s kids?

I fear that Dr Mooncake is not our man, however…

Oh, you’re right about that but I can still dream…

Hmmm…went to the local Asian fusion joint and asked the waitress if I could check out some snowskin mooncakes…her response was not favorable…

Until you explained that they really exist, I thought this had to be a “damn you autocorrect” moment and was trying to back into what the author might have really typed.

Were you zipped up when you said it? Context is everything…

What we need is a MSR and Loire-lovin’ Basho. TNs that are blissfully brief, yet endlessly evocative. A minimalist Terry Theise.

(Referring, I’m sure, to Weingut Hirsch’s 07 Riesling Zöbinger Heiligenstein.)

“A minimalist Terry Theise” is indeed the exact persona that I had in mind…we should have a trial run, encourage folks to post haiku tasting notes. It would at the very least be funny and entertaining.
