What was your take on CH ? I bought a few and thought they were eh. But was 3 for 3 on DN.
We need more of @Patrick_K around here!!! ![]()
CH were very solid āeverydayā wines. Nothing really blew your socks off. But to me, most were consistently 90 pointers. They were all cabs or blends. I only bought the cherries IIRC. Lot 179, 200, 300, 400 etc.
Gotcha. Guess you had the cherries and I had the pits. Lol. They werenāt bad but they didnāt seem any better than wines I could buy at a local retailer for an equivalent price. Think I bought 2 or 3 CH cabs back then .
Well played. The Havens fire sale and a few choice lots were excellent. I didnāt try nearly as many as with the last two incarnations, but while few were exciting, most were at least worth the price of admission. If I was still in NJ Iād put together a nice dN sampler for you. The wines are really in a good place right now. Given the fact that every new CamX release is the ābest wine everā, Iām assuming Iāll be happy with these as well.
Cam X Lot # 04 - FreestoneāOccidental, Sonoma Coast - Chardonnay
Good gracious this is lovely juice. Description is spot on, and this is my idea of a perfect chard. Excellent juice, and even better price, whatās not to likeā¦?
Very well done!
Cam X Lot # 22 - Rutherford, Napa Valley - Malbec
Nice wine. Leather, chocolate, dusty, smooth tannins, easy drinking, relatively complex. Nose is nice and projects. Drinking pretty well right now. Good value.
What temperature do you recommend for Lot 4?
I prefer to drink it ever so slightly chilled. Drinking it cold is a disservice to the wine and wonāt get you the full experience. Thatās just my 2 cents, you canāt go wrong with this stuff.
Based on your review, I opened #22 last night and enjoyed alongside grilled flank steak. Fine upon first pour then opened up very nicely after an hour in the decanter. Agreed that the value here is fantastic.
Yeah, I try not to drink anything - whether itās cheap or expensive - too early. I have bought way too much dN & CamX wines over the years, but that does give me the luxury of letting it age. Most of it is in a basement storage room at ambient temp, which is pretty reliably around 65 degrees down there. Only the arguably nicer/more expensive dN are in the huge wine fridge. I have enough of the '18 cabs to get me another year or two, then Iāll start in on the dN 19s. I have no 2020, so by 2029 I should be starting in on my 21s. All these CamX 23s (about a dozen cases) are many years away for me.
Have you had dN down there for 5+ years? My experience is that wine stored at 68-75 does just fine, but I worry about getting much hotter. My basement here in CO gets hot because the boilers and HVAC are down there. There is one crawl space that seems cooler, but of course itās early April. Itās also not that accessible. I suspect I can get a dozen cases in there without too much trouble.
Iāve got a Central NY basement that keeps my wines nice and cool.
I waaaay overdid it on the dN, and have split my 30+ cases of Cam-X with a friend.
I hit the 2018 and '19 dNs now and again, but Iāve still got Cameron Hughes to drink!
Yes, Iāve had it in basement ambient storage since purchased new. No problems at all.
How much would you have to spend to get an equivalent merlot from your wine merchant. I would easily say $45+ to even get into the ballpark.
@Cameron_Hughes thanks for the tasting note emails. Question about the dates and windows. Are your waitimes listed i.e. wait 4-6 weeks, from the date of the email or from the tasting date listed in each blurb?
from when I sent them emailā¦everything on the fly over here these days!
Dumped my last 2 Cam X 18 Pinot Noirs. Iāve had bad wines b4 and Iād bring them to big gatherings of civilians just to get rid of them. These did not meet even that low threshold.
Cam, I really appreciate the tasting notes such as the one sent out today. If you could keep a compilation online, updated as you retaste, that would be much appreciated. Nothing like straight from the horse mouth!
sorry you didnāt like itā¦I am at a loss to understand. I am selling the hell out of that wine right now here in CAā¦people buying multiple cases at a time after trying a bottle. Style issue?
