What CAM X wine are you drinking tonight?

Good to hear! May have to revisit as last I had was quite acidic and disjointed

Lot 27

PnP nose was dusty, bloody, and oaky. Impenetrable. Palate was quite tannic, but elegant and restrained. Ok - off to the decanter it goes.

Over the course of 9 hrs in the decanter, tannins softened considerably, aromatics improved a lot to provide ample dark and red berries to accompany the mineral notes from opening. My favorite glass was the last, where all of a sudden I’m getting menthol and blackberry compote.

Should have held off on opening this but quite happy to see where this could end up. Not planning on touching these for a long while.

Lot 49: wife calls it red fruit I’ll calm it purple. Rich and viscous, bold drying tannins.

I sort of doubt n’t hate these notes:

ā€œDeeply extracted, dark garnet in the glass with an opaque core. The bouquet opens meaty and chocolatey with ripe blackberry, black cherry, espresso bean, and lots of leather and cedar. With air, hints of raspberry kirsch join with spring flowers, toasted caramel and tobacco notes to create a beautiful bouquet.

Supple on entry with ripe blackberry pie and cocoa notes welded to a potent structure of minerally, big-grained tannins that unfurl gobs of chocolate and black fruit interlaced with leather and cedar in a long, resounding finish. Stupendous! Will drink beautifully over the next 10–15 years.ā€

I do think the longer it has been open (about 2 hours), the more you get the darker notes, blackberry, black cherry, espresso.

I am a bit g fan of cab franc, specifically aged cab franc. This seems to be showing much better than 29 and better than 21 (which I liked).

I’m not ordering more than the case I have, but no regrets so far.

Very glad to hear this. I decanted one (Lot 2) last week and it really didn’t taste ready for primetime. So I rebottled to drink the next day. I ended up giving it to my father in law since we were going away. I’ll revisit with a longer decant at some point. But overall I’m not super bullish on short term tasting of these. I really didn’t think 2 or 22 were nearly ready. I gave Lot 22 a full three days. If the 22’s aren’t ready to go I’d have to think the 23’s need a lot of time.

Another delivery today, lot 39. Very purple, plenty of fruit, 3hr decant. Going to lay these down and come back in a few months to revisit. Has some great potential, very palatable wine.

I received lot 39 today too and was going to open 1 up until I saw your post. Based on your notes, I’ll put them away for awhile and bring out lot 35 to drink in the coming 6 - 12 months.

Couldn’t help myself and popped Lot 39 right off the truck.

PnP. Intense bouquet with rich dark fruits, violets, baking spice, cream, and chocolate. Velvety on entry, with very prominent fruit and smooth tannin. Am sure additional complexity will emerge over the course of a healthy decant, but very promising thus far.

Any POBEGA reports on Lot 37? Mine arrived today but I already have something in the decanter for tonight. I’m guessing since its mountain fruit, it’s going to be quite tight. 11 of my 12 are going into long term storage, holding 1 back to open and see how it’s coming along.

Lot 39 might be the best Malbec I’ve ever had. Granted, I don’t drink many, but this is much more ā€˜my style’ (big Napa cab lover) than the high-end Argentinian versions I’ve had. I haven’t had Devil Proof, etc., but this is better than any California Malbec I can remember having as well. For the money? Ridiculous. Like a plush Merlot. So. Much. Chocolate.

LOT Notes for 39

Absolutely delicious.

Finished the bottle today and it’s a bit more nuanced, but still pure velvet. Too good, I don’t think they are going to last me long enough to really see them mature.

Lot 44 Zin.
Day one initial aroma of wet stone on a hot day. Turned to fruit and alcohol after a few hours. Full bodied and smooth drinking. Chocolate and berries. Very unlike most of the Zin I’m used to. Really liking this a lot! Day two the Georgia pollen got me and could smell nothing and taste little. Day three, tonight, it has lost some complexity. Seem to be getting a bit of stone on the nose again but mostly berries. Tasting mostly of berries with the tannins a bit more pronounced. Also, has a purple color around the edges I did not notice before. Still loving this.

Lot 20 has developed some sous bois if you slow-ox it for 3 days in the bottle. Really nice Tuesday wine with foraged mushroom and fiddleheads for me.

We opened a bottle of lot 34, Oakville petit sirah last night. On pop and pour, there was a weird aroma of what I can only describe as not-fresh beef. Like not spoiled, but when you open up the wrapper and smell it in the fridge and think ā€œI should cook that tonight, it’s not going to last another dayā€ Over the next two hours, this decreased but never quite went away. The aroma was otherwise quite simplistic blackberry/blueberry, with few hints of anything else. Surprisingly little barrel spice for a 100% new oak wine. On the palette the wine is smooth, but limp on the mid palette. There are some substantial tannins at the end but they feel out of place in such an otherwise simple fruity wine. All in all we didn’t like it! I’m hoping this was a bad bottle or the result of bottle shock because otherwise I don’t know what I’m going to do with the other 11 bottles!

HA, Simon! Keep the faith? I also opened my first bottle of X34 last night (for EVALUATION)

I’m generally not a big fan of PS, too often overblown, volatile and too big. However, I decanted for 1.5 hours and poured back into the bottle for service. I thought it would be a good match with Pizza. It was! For me, it’s Like a nice CS with the bell pepper replaced by subtle black pepper characteristic of PS fruit. I realize that this 2024 is in the very midst of bottle shock, after only about one month bottled. There is an uncharacteristic middle flavor, I attribute it to bottle shock and premature evaluation. The 100% NFO, is in hiding, it’s young. I really enjoyed this and I showed great restraint to leave a little smidgen for day 2 evaluation.

This was the first time I’ve ordered a full case of PS. Last night I ordered a second case of X34! A nice wine for a very nice (Tranche 2 priced, now), price still. :wine_glass: :wine_glass: Very nice with Pizza

Per Cam’s X34 offer:

Trust me on this one folks, this is not your average Oakville Petite Sirah. Exquisitely crafted with an elegance and finesse I have never experienced in this varietal, this is simply mind-blowing on so many levels.

This Lot is certain to go down as Legend!

I DO trust Cam! He has earned my trust over the years, bottles, cases and yes pallets (of 56). That makes things so much easier & better! :face_blowing_a_kiss:

@S1m0n_b, no one has any busy drinking a 2024 Petite Sirah in early 2026. Way too young, regardless of what you paid. Hide it away until 2028, and ideally 2030!

Ha Ha! I had that same problem the other night.
Left my wife totally dissatisfied!

It was a 2023 Frogs Leap Jeremiah.
So disappointing…

Agreed 100%! I was not drinking. I was evaluating (guzzling). I’m totally blown away how accessible this young PS is already. It was tasty & so I bought another case. Rules, are meant to be broken? :man_shrugging::wine_glass: Prior to T3 or T4…?

Last night: Side by side, I vastly preferred X34 to Lot 298 2020 Pauillac Bordeaux Red Wine! Go figure? :man_shrugging:
