All of them? Seriously, I have rarely bought anything where the idea of opening it wasn’t exciting, even as part of exploration.
There’s a few things that raise the bar, but they also raise the expectations, and that’s often dangerous. How does that singular, potentially irreplaceable bottle measure up to the imagined experience. It honestly makes me more nervous than excited.
Makes sense to me and I definitely appreciate the sentiment. I think there are some I’m very excited to try but they don’t necessarily have the same weight as say, the bottle I bought when I went wine tasting for the first time with my partner. Are there any bottles you’re specifically holding for a special occasion?
Well I was holding a bottle of 2001 DRC Richebourg for my dad’s 80th birthday, but he sadly didn’t quite get there. It’s one of the things (along with cleaning out his wine cellar) that has shifted my perspective on holding for the right occasion. Sounds like your special occasions are more near term, so that’s good. Corison Kronos is a hell of a wine.
I like the topic! Unfortunately (or fortunately depending on how you look at it) there are many I am excited to open, even if it’s just checking in on the evolution. But at the end of the day, I’m most excited to open vintages with personal meaning - birth year (own or children) or anniversaries.
Great topic. I’m planning to open the first bottle I ever bought for my collection, a 2012 Mongeard-Mugneret Grands Echezeaux I somehow found on a grocery store shelf for half the WS low, on my 50th birthday in 15 years or so. And I have a bottle of birth year Madeira that I’ll hopefully open when I’m in my 70s or 80s.
Also, I don’t own it yet, but I want to find some 1994 Dow’s. I had it at a celebratory dinner for my college graduation in 2010 and it was the first wine I can remember drinking that really stuck with me.
2002 Kusuda Syrah - New Zealand, North Island, Wairarapa, Martinborough (6/30/2024)
The 2002 Kusuda Syrah was a generous gift from Sonoe Hirabayashi and I saved it for an opportunity to drink it with another syrah slut like myself. Hiroyuki Kusuda’s first Syrah vintage. At 22 years of age this wine drank with the youthful exuberance of a teenager. Classic black olive tapenade, menthol, blackberry, white pepper nose. Medium bodied, lithe, sweet black cherry, velvety texture, mouth puckering acidity, wet stone minerality and a balanced tannic structure that screams “lay me down for 10 more years and I’ll really knock your socks off!” Mel is headed back to his hotel and I am savoring the last couple pours of this wine. Damn I love Syrah but this wine is really a game changer for me. It’s a crime that these wines are not available in the States. Just WOW! World class Syrah! Thank you Sonoe for the opportunity to experience this wine.
