2013 Jean-Claude Bessin Chablis Grand Cru Valmur - France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru (13/5/2023)
A little thin and lacked concentration. Some green notes, didn’t transcend the weaker vintage in Chablis. (89 pts.) -
2019 Philippe Alliet Chinon Vieilles Vignes - France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Chinon (12/5/2023)
The pyrazine notes on the nose were quite distracting but palate was fresh with dark red fruit. Appears to be made in a more approachable style, wouldn’t keep this for too long. Not very memorable. (88 pts.)
Super well balanced Chablis. It is not the style of Chardonnay that excites me the most, but it is enjoyable and super quality at its price range.
2015 Esprit de Pavie: dark fruited, a little heat, smooth, a little flabby. Pass.
For those not familiar with this wine, it’s inspired by the red blends in the Loire, with more than a nod to CRB. The 2019 is a little bit richer than some prior vintages, but still has good snap!
Years ago Mouton (or Lafite, cant recall) wanted to trade her some land offering 1 acre for 2 acres of her property. Held strong and ended up trading 1:1.
Property is very well thought of.
2019 Ridge Vineyards Monte Bello chardonnay. I’ve come to expect good things from this wine but this was drinking like the best vintage I’ve yet had. Very generous with flavor and intensity without being overblown in any way.
Full blown spring is finally here near Boston, and the backyard birds salute it with song. Me, I pour a glass of 2017 Carbonnieux Blanc, pose the glass and cork for the “money shot”, and then raise the glass in a toast to the lushly green backyard, from our now ready-for-business back porch.
I am enjoying the taste of this wine blend of 60% Sauvignon and 40% Semillion. A tasty wine and a ponderable wine also. The wine first fakes a brief move in taste towards Sauternes, but that is followed by a quick move towards dry, fruity, and relatively full bodied. Fruit is apple, pear, soaked in lemon. Very nice as I sip away at it.
Very recommended.
Lost my taste for Gewurztraminer but a number of weeks ago drank one of my last two bottles of this magical wine. Pretty certain I bought this wine, as well as a bunch of other ZH wines from this vintage after having dinner with Olivier. These wines seem immortal.
I can’t figure out how to ship/pick up what I’ve ordered from
Garagiste
You’ll get an email from them confirming your shipping info when they are about to ship. Shipping is pretty reasonable, I think last time I paid around 45 per case.
They ship when the orders have arrived in full case quantities during the possible weather windows.
Summarizing the weekend:
2010 Goutorbe Millesime Brut (good, not great like the 2008 special club)
2019 Benjamin Leroux Volnay 1er Cru Les Santenots (youthful and charming, needs more time)
2010 La Rioja Alta Ardanza (superb, maybe my top qpr wine ever)
2022 Dönnhoff Tonschiefer Riesling Trocken (great summer sipper)
Jacques Lassaigne Les Vignes de Montgueux Blanc de Blancs Extra Brut (real nice development, elegant)
2016 La Dame de Montrose (youthful, but so drinkable, tannins well behaved, keep)
2017 Domaine Clos de la Chapelle Volnay 1er Cru En Carelle (my last bottle of this, drinking real well now)
2020 Savage Syrah (very pleasant surprise, performs way above its price)
His Cinsault dominant “Follow the Line” is good as well.
Wow - talk about burying the lede…That view you have!
Some really nice wines over mother’s day weekend
2008 Merry Edwards Cuvee Merideth late disgorged “Bubbles by Merry”
2008 SL Artemis
2019 Fingers Crossed White
2020 Aberro Syrah Bien Nacido
Thoughts on the Aberro?
Loved it. I don’t have a style to compare it with but it’s got unique characteristics and winemaker signature. I saw there’s 1 CT review and I mostly agree with that, though we drank it over the course of a night rather than two days. For me it’s worth the price of admission and I would buy again.
From the Stereophonic Italian packs posted in Monopole Cru a little bit ago:
-
2015 Boniperti Fara Barton - Italy, Piedmont, Northern Piedmont, Fara (5/15/2023)
Very light in color, edges bricking quite a bit, looks to be older than it is, but on the palate it is lifting, bright fruited, full of sandalwood and herbs, lacking the grip one expects from Nebbiolo - enjoyable, but drinks more like a Barbera or Dolcetto
