2017 Heimark Cabernet Sauvignon & 2020 Panoramico Rioja (in the glass / decanter in the picture) tonight
2023 Sandlands Trousseau. What a treat to drink.
How was the Heimark?
FWIW I opened a 2010 Fuligni Riserva Brunello a couple of nights ago and this one was pretty advanced, to the point where I would probably have preferred it a few years ago. I have never tried to age Brunellos much past 15 years — no wisdom, just never could keep from opening them. I think I agree with you, I am going to drink the few 2010s I have and probably not wait on the 2013s either.
thnx John, I opened my last bottle of the 2010 Fuligni Brunello on Sunday - and it was corked. Your note sadly does not surprise me.
Still have a bottle of 2010 Livio Sassetti Pertamali to go
Brodie
It was a wonderful wine, smooth and very easy drinking, I gave it a 2 hour decant (needed it for the sediment) was drinking good right away, didn’t change much over that time. Had it with wings for the Super Bowl, but would have been better to have with a steak. Have 1 more bottle of the 2017 that I will let age for a while, also have a couple 2021s but don’t think they are ready yet.
How was La Soufrandière in 2022?
Pretty good! Had a little roundness and opulence to it, but it had plenty of character to back it up.
Brassy-gold, med+ acidity, nose was bit tight from serving temperature, but it had this fascinating palate that included things like white cherry, wild raspberry, and eventually very-ripe-grapefruit. My wife felt like it eventually had a bit of the buttered popcorn note to it, which she appreciated.
Had never had Soufrandiere, would certainly buy again although I’ve heard their Pouilly-Vinzelles is where it’s at.
P.S. I don’t necessarily aim to keep white wines overnight, but I did in this instance and was surprised by how sharply it fell off. I know they tend to go low sulfur, and then no-sulfur for their Cuvee Zen, but based off how this showed next day, I’m a little leery of cuvee zen… that may be unfair though.
This 19’ Ambonnay Freedom rang both our bells last night. NOT disgorged, sitting on lees.
It didn’t register at first that I was sipping a slightly cloudy champagne, but I really enjoyed the yeasty taste. Played well with Szechuan Chinese.
I am sometimes leery of no-dosage brut nature because of screechy acidity in some vintages or producers, but in the right vintages, in the right hands, its great. This 2019 was complex, rounded and balanced. Delicious stuff.
Drinking well at 20 years, Pauillac like with cassis and cigar box a la GPL. A balanced refined middleweight. From Waiheke Island off the coast from Auckland in a sunny and dry microclimate. NZ most famous Cab blend.
The good news: Not pre-moxed!
The bad news: It’s corked! ![]()
Not under DIAM.
I like Marc Morey wines, but between this one and too many poxed bottles, I’m done.
I also like them a lot, but haven’t had any poxed ones. How old are you talking? I’m not aging my white Burgundy from anyone that long anymore. 2014 is the oldest in my cellar.
A friend’s 30th birthday in Zurich on Saturday - an incredible collection of large format wines.
The 2018 Roagna Barbaresco Faset (as per the bottle not the menu) was absolutely stunning and blew a collection of very fine wines out of the water.
Youngish - 2016-2020
Whoa. That’s a huge bummer. I had a 2017 Virondot 2 weeks ago that was awesome and still seemed to be climbing. Maybe I need to rethink my plans for these.
Nice Brodie. Only tried a couple of these and they were ‘classic’.
Tangent, but how do you rate the Bilancia wines from HB?
Very good wines.
Their top wine is the La Collina Syrah. Made in a Cote Rotie style from a steep hillside vineyard.
All the wines are well made with good balance
