What bottle of wine did you open today? (Part 2)

What are the odds of that?

Hoping it’s just particularly bad luck (lightning has to strike somewhere), but worried that since it’s two bottles from the same case and a strong TCA profile I might be in for some more heartache.

Yes I approve! So glad this showed well for you.

I find the regular Ch les Tours Rouge really improves with a few years of cellar time. The 2017 is amazing right now. I am holding my younger vintages a little while longer but your note is encouraging me to try a 2020 soon.

cheers

Yes, absolutely! I only tried one bottle from one vintage so give it a go!

2015 Guillaume Gilles Cornas

I do not drink a lot of syrah, but I do love some of these more restrained bottlings from the Northern RhĂ´ne

2023 Fait Main Beckstoffer Missouri Hopper Cab Sauv - young but very good, will try to wait to drink the other bottles to see how it evolves (label reminds me of Donnie Darko

Just some really nice easy going wines tonight.

2021 Bruno Lorenzon Mercurey 1er Cru Les Croichots - these Lorenzon whites are always so good and drink so well young. This is very smooth, very nice subtle oak and slightly tropical, very enjoyable at this age. It’s a slight step up on the outstanding Clos Alfred but probably needs a few years to show it.

2013 Hirsch Vineyard Pinot Noir Reserve - I love VHR and have been building a vertical through a seller in Switzerland who has access - I tasted one of these Hirsch a few years ago and really loved it - very nice fruit, good acidity and very delicate without being thin. I bought a few bottles and this is the last one - still very good, although I’d say its right on the edge now, as there was a very subtle hint of raisin.

2021 J-C Ramonet Chassagne-Montrachet Rouge - this is such a quaffable wine, it’s so light, but absolutely not thin, with crunchy red fruits and so very elegant. Ramonet reds are such a bargain.

Thursday afternoon. Our Canadian visitors preferred the 2016 Felton Road Block 5 over the 2015 Ata Rangi. The Ata Rangi was bigger and more powerful, the Block 5 showing some real elegance.

Everyone adored the 2007 Jamet. Youthful early maturity and very approachable

2016 Reynvaan In the Rocks Syrah

Mature and ready to go. Some Rocks funk but not overwhelming and it mostly blew off. Classic olive, bacon fat, grilled meat.

Outstanding alongside barbecue pork ribs.

What am I missing? I’ve never understood the appeal of Dom/Ch des Tours across multiple vintages. I keep trying because people love to pour them in NYC, but the wines are always somewhat hot, jammy, and disjointed to me. Even with age.

Had this one in the decanter for 6 hours. Tasted, was kind of tight and thought my palate was off. Asked my wife and she also said it was tight. Few more sips and it’s not tight, it’s tainted. Down the sink it went.

Emergency pull for a bottle of Rafanelli afterwards.

2nd bottle tonight, Realm The Tempest 2023, Red blend (majority Merlot). Great wine, really opened up after a 2 hour decant, looking forward to drinking the other bottles, drinking really well.

Big and bodacious easy-drinker, my first real enjoyment of wine in weeks (post-influenza A; would not recommend)

Get the wine, not the flu. Sounds like good advice.

What decanter is this?

SANDY’S BIRTHDAY AT NICOLAS - (11/1/2026)

Immediately said yes to a friend who was organising a gathering at Nicolas as it will be changing hands at the end of the month. One of the few wine bars in Singapore with a reasonable mark-up and will miss it when it is gone. As usual there are always bargains to be spotted and picked out the Egly Coteaux Champenois which showed excellently.

  • 2011 Bernard Dugat-Py Corton-Charlemagne Vieilles Vignes - France, Burgundy, CĂ´te de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru
A strange mixture of heavy-handed oak with obvious spice and coconut note, but underlying fruit was strangely rather green despite being tropical in nature. (88 pts.)
  • 2020 Hubert Lamy Saint-Aubin 1er Cru Les Frionnes Blanc - France, Burgundy, CĂ´te de Beaune, Saint-Aubin 1er Cru
Much preferred this to the Dugat-Py alongside, more classic in nature with racy citrus fruit but could see why some felt that the acidity was too high. Needed time for reduction to blow off. (91 pts.)
  • 2021 Egly-Ouriet Coteaux Champenois CuvĂŠe des Grands CĂ´tĂŠs Vieilles Vignes Rouge Ambonnay - France, Champagne, Coteaux Champenois
2094 bottles made. My contribution after spotting this in the cellar, my first experience with this wine and very impressed. Initially it came across as a little too burly and oaky, so Nicolas made the right call to give it time in the decanter. Much better with air as it developed a silky texture with a mineral core, the purity of the sweet dark cherry fruit could easily have been mistaken for a top-class Burgundy. Would love to try one with more age. (94 pts.)
  • 2019 Benjamin Leroux Vosne-RomanĂŠe - France, Burgundy, CĂ´te de Nuits, Vosne-RomanĂŠe
Some Vosne five-spice on the nose, palate was a little too dark and extracted for my liking. I haven’t been as much of a fan of this vintage compared to others. Could do with more time. (90 pts.)
  • 2021 Benoit Moreau Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru La Cardeuse Rouge - France, Burgundy, CĂ´te de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru
Only blind today. Vintage was easy to call as a '21 as it showed a lighter, more transparent style compared to the '19 Leroux I had before. The five-spice and mocha notes on the nose, with the ultra-fine tannins on the palate initially led me toward Vosne but I could see why some others mistook this as Beaujolais because of the juicy red fruit (although the acid structure was clearly Burgundy to me). I always mistake good Chassagnes for CdNs and this was no exception. (92 pts.)

Nice! I had this a few years back and it was very tasty but not fireworks-level good. A 94 clos st urbain VT was closer… but the 94s when on can be mind blowing. Which ones are you having?

Drank a Conterno Il Favot Langhe Nebbiolo 2020 and much enjoyed it. Very light on its feet and very drinkable. The girls and I went through two of these with dinner and everyone enjoyed them.

I’m going to pick up a few more.

Fourrier Bourgogne Rouge 2022
The strong stemminess I picked up on the first bottle of this in September of last year is now a companion to the earthy backdrop but without taking over the fruit. Great aromatics and plenty of ripe red berries. This can and should continue to evolve nicely for a few years and the herbal notes should bring a savoury element as it does. Not very complex but very easy to drink and pleasurable. Good bottle of Bourgogne.
