What bottle of wine did you open today? (Part 2)

An eclectic mix last night, at Staplehouse in ATL as we pre-gamed for the Bob Weir ATL Symphony show. 1983 von Simmern Eiswein for the win win win. Thanks @rob_klafter

Bottle #1 - refermenting in bottle. Weird, but oddly tasty.

Bottle #2 - in perfect form and utterly delicious

I still have a bottle of that Christoffel left. Ready to drink up or sit on it?

I doubt that sound bottles are in any need of being drunk up. This one was just funky, but still very fresh.

2014 Emrich-schonleber Halenberg GG No detailed note, but this bottle, which was very shutdown and anonymous in the years following release, is now showing very well. The nose especially explodes out of the glass, even just after popping the cork.

Day before we opened both a Patricia Green and a Goodfellow Durant - both were singing and delicious!

Couple of days before that Maitre de Chai’s Stampede Zinfandel - great stuff.

2017 Chateau Lalande with home-raised beef shank ragu. On it’s own, a little disappointed in the mid-palate. Has enough tannin and acid, should be much better with the beef.

Our Bordeaux selection isn’t great in SD and the state outlawed retailer shipping after dtc from wineries was approved. 2 steps forward, 2 steps back in regards to consumer choice.

Is the Petit Cantenac worth buying most vintages?

2019 Chateau Fontenil
Continuing to sample some “just drink them” Bordeaux possibilities and this one had me at hello. With roasted chicken at dinner. I am the daily drinker and I offered my wife a sip out of my glass and she then asked for a pour. That is rare, folks. Very promising first glass and we’ll see how the rest of the bottle goes.

2018 La Jota Cabernet Howell Mountain. Restaurant purchase, no formal notes, but what a delicious wine. Will get some to put away.

2020 Battenfeld Spanier Riesling. Good, but nowhere near worth the $58 I paid for it. Somehow lacking in acid, despite being on the drier side (but not fully dry) and with a slight Muscadine vibe initially (that subsides). Just no magic there, but not a bad wine.

At lunch. On the nose we thought this was dead: forest floor, mushrooms… scary. It requires a ton of air and then the palate comes alive: 100% griottes, crunchy fruit, powdery but assertive tanins, cocoa powder. Calls back for another sip. I always find Mazoyeres a little austere. This ain’t no Charmes but so enjoyable in its own way. Price was good but you must enjoy coaxing pleasure out of a wine.

On deck for tonight:

Isn’t the purpose of half bottles to be drunk?

How was that La Begude? Approachable?

Give it a good 3-4hr decant.

The Charlemagne was all it should be. While the Meursault was wound up tight. Angelus is way too young but showing great potential with plenty of sweet fruit but also a great mineral streak. The Branaire was spot on: great balance, plenty of fruit with a wonderful nose. Great night.

Was that Branaire an original purchase or more recent? I never had many 1993 Bdx and they have been long since drunk, but they were pretty decent. I don’t think that many came to the US. I remember having a very nice Pontet Canet in Paris once.

Bought in 2005 by the buddy i was drinking it with. It was in a great place. Perfect mix of dense fruit and savoury tertiary flavors. Long finish. It held beautifully and developed into a great wine.

Edit: Friend is in France, I’m in France so not sure about 93s in the US…
