What bottle of wine did you open today? (Part 2)

Excellent showing, not ripe or primary at all. Yes young but so damn delicious.

Has plenty more potential to show but I don’t regret opening this at all. Beautiful wine with loads of complexity, power, and finesse, and a finish that echoes for minutes.

A couple of casual wines with non-wine geeks

  • 2023 Comm. G.B. Burlotto Verduno Pelaverga - Italy, Piedmont, Alba, Verduno Pelaverga (22/6/2025)
A very pretty, pale ruby red appearance. Light-footed on both the nose and the palate with fresh raspberry and tomato notes, was surprised to see that this was 13.5% alcohol. Quite gulpable as the tannins could barely be felt, good balance between acidity and tenderness of fruit. Felt like a cross between Gamay and Nebbiolo. First time trying this and one of the best values that I have come across at S$50 landed. (92 pts.)
  • 2022 Domaine Verset A & E Syrah - France, Vin de France (17/6/2025)
Quite serious for an entry-level wine with excellent fruit quality, without losing the playfulness that it should have. Drinks like a serious Gamay but with some savoury Syrah notes. Great value at S$36 landed. (91 pts.)

2014 Occidental Bodega Highlands Vineyard Cuvée Elizabeth.

Higher in alcohol than more recent editions, but you wouldn’t know it. Snappy red fruit, a nice lick of acidity, and the beginnings of an earthy backbone.

A great pairing with the food at Rich Table.

Nice wine. I’m a fan of the Occidental Pinots. Just had the 2015 of the same cuvée last week.

Luis Seabra Xisto Illimitado 2021
Bought this as part of a case of “cheap” stuff I’ve never had. Very well made and good wine. Syrah purplish hue. The nose is mostly red-fruited but some blueberries show up, some crushed rocks in there as well and hints of sweet pie spices. Medium acidity around a red berries core, medium acidity and fine tannins with some grip on the finish. This would be wonderful with un-sauced beef on the bbq. A lovely wine and a good purchase at 16 euros.

These were so good when I tried them last year. Eager to see the 2014s get released.

Glad to see these drinking well. They were a favorite for a while, going back to 04s. I’ve been out on these since the 09s after a pretty big streak of oxidized bottles though. 14s release may get me off the sideline for the 1ers as the 14 Chablis VV punched WAY above its level.

1998 Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé Chambolle-Musigny

Fantastic with tonight’s roast. Hard to say whether its power or freshness stood out more. Intense, dense berry fruit reminded me of those blackberry and raspberry candies with soft centers. Cranberry, forest floor, and mushroom notes followed. Still surprisingly primary for a 1998, especially given the vintage’s mixed track record. An amazing bottle.
