What bottle of wine did you open today? (Part 2)

A last minute open for just a glass as we finished our cheese plate. Slight sense of effervescence fading quickly, then rich sweet orchard fruit - apples and peaches, with an energetic balancing acid.
Nice wine.

JB Neufeld Cecilia 2023
55% Sauvignon Blanc 45% Semillon

Totally enjoying this on a warm, spring night. Pineapple, kiwi, lime zest, and citrus blossoms. Lively acidity and I can definitely feel the % of Semillon in the weight on the palate. I think this will age wonderfully and I am going to hold off opening my last two bottles for several years.

Another 1983. Definitely one of the best looking '83 corks I’ve had in a while. Wine was decent too.

1983 Château Prieuré-Lichine

Still very much alive, albeit past peak. Initially a little funky and unclean but it blew off after a short decant. Slightly browning rim but deep ruby core. Nose is developed with slightly raisiny red fruits, menthol, plum, cherries, woody tones, cigar wrapper. Palate is medium bodied, decent acidity, red fruits, wet earthy notes, not overly complex. Nice wine, still alive and kicking and even enjoyable. I doubt this has ever been anything but a nice claret. Finishes medium with softened but still present tannins

Can’t recall how many I’ve had of this, but because of the very friendly price that stayed constant through the many years, it was a lot.
Was always solid.

Which restaurant is this in Kyoto?
I’m planning to go to Kyoto next week. TIA.

One of my favorite wines on the planet, paired with a lovely chicken thigh dish that my wife made in a crock pot of all things…

Robert, glad to see your note. I have 4 of the 2021 Griffe coming from Thatchers (hopefully soon).

It’s outstanding. Up there with 19 and 17.

2020 Violin Chardonnay Willamette Valley

Popped and poured. This was a very nice Oregon chard. Great acidity, strong minerality, with juicy lemon notes. Reminiscent of a good Chablis. But there was this weird flavor that I couldn’t quite put my finger on. Then it finally clicked with me: barbecue smoke. It’s very faint, easily missed, but it’s definitely there. It was only then that I realized this was a 2020, the year of the WV wild fires. I can’t say for sure that this wine has smoke taint—I know some WV Chardonnay was harvested before the smoke arrived—but that seems like the most obvious explanation for what I tasted.

To be clear, I will finish this bottle and I will happily drink the other bottle of this that I own. The wine isn’t ruined by any means. But it’s probably something to be aware of.

Appreciate the added info. It didn’t occur to me (smacking my own forehead) that this producer was directly related to the Couly-Dutheil operation.

Good lord did you spill it all over the glass ? Hahaha a

One of the best chablis’ I’ve ever tasted. Especially at this price point & from what should be a grand cru vineyard. $50… velvety body, candied lemon, floral component and well balanced acidity. Could have drank the whole bottle but had to share

I have a couple of 2017’s from Jeremy Arnaud. I’m looking forward to trying them. Scott Kulek of Lopa Wine shared some insightful information about this micro-estate.

Felton Road Bannockburn Pinot Noir 2020

On opening night a lovely symphony of fresh bright red fruits at peak maturity. You could smell it from afar. Nice acidity to keep the low key tobacco and forest floor hints in check. Very good fruit forward profile against the ā€˜deeper’ and dustier notes. Decided to keep the bottle open for the next day due to the many many reviews on CT that called for extended aeration but boy I guess we like a different profile of Pinot Noir. Was way too over-aerated. You learn.
