What bottle of wine did you open today? (Part 2)

Meh. Maybe my expectations were too high. There’s some connection to Evasham Wood here and I remember liking the Pinot Noir from EW I tried many years ago but this isn’t doing much. Very clean and if there’s something positive it’s that they didn’t try too hard to put makeup on it. But it’s just generic white wine more than an interesting Chardonnay. $24.

Honestly, this bottle exceeded my expectations. I had recently purchased several Chards from Aubert, but the pinots were more of a “meh, why not give 'em a shot?” Great body, great nose, and fantastic flavor, if you’re into CA pinots. It didn’t come across particularly complex, but it was a real crowd pleaser. I was surprised that the wine began to shut down an hour in, but by then the bottle was nearly gone so no biggie. Would buy again.

Casual bbq-type dinner at some friends. Kept it light with a 2013 Domaine Eden Santa Cruz Cab and a 2012 Bedrock Papera Zin. Both really shined.

2010 Felsina Rancia - double decanted and gave it 90 minutes back in the bottle. This is in a really nice spot - particularly on the palate. Good length that is dominated by dark cherry. Hard to beat with Cheeseboard pizza.

MB wanted “something crisp”. Purchased for a song over a decade ago, this fit the bill. Grand cru density, age has added a slight tropical tone to its citrus dominated flavor profile. Excellent structure and depth, with plenty of life left in the tank to go even further.

From my dad’s cellar this reminder that Chianti Classico is almost always the better value.

Nice variety the last couple nights. Highlights were the 12 Cristal Rose, the 19 Bonin Meursault VV, and the 05 Montrose. Both 90 Pinots were great.

I had a 2012 Defaix Les Lys blind on Friday that reminded me a lot of recent Raveneaus, lots of lemon and minerals, round through the middle, and a long refreshingly tart finish. I was impressed.

Birth year for my birthday at Boka tonight.

Another great bottle. Always worried it will die too quickly after popping. Last glass was best after about 1.5 hours. Surprisingly very little sediment. As always, thanks again @Mark_Golodetz

Opened by a generous friend the other night. Dried rose pedal, blue-red fruit and freshly tilled stony earth on the nose. Presents young in the glass with a similar fruit profile to 17 Les Cras, but with significantly more depth… Pomegranate and alpine blueberries. Beautifully integrated tannins and a finish that just drives on and on. With time in the glass the nose begins to develop exotic spices revealing new shades of it’s former self. This wine just continued to reveal new facets of depth and complexity that you would not want to miss, a truly cinematic wine. No crime to drink now, but obviously this is still very much on an upward trajectory.

Sunday night was Christmas for us. The Vilmart was excellent and was gone in a flash. the 2017 Buisson-Charles was very good, but seemed on the edge of Premox. If I had more of this, I’d drink it soon. The 2005 d’Angerville was mediocre - just not giving at all, though better on the palate than on the nose. it wasn’t in the same league as the 2010 Brick House we drank earlier in the week. Given the performance of the d’Angerville, I thought we needed another red, and the 2016 Lagier Meredith Syrah was well received. Spicy and fruity, with great presence and finish.
