What bottle of wine did you open today? (Part 2)

Think might have been too young indeed! Agree that these house NVs can age forever based on past experience

Last night during our stay with Emidio Pepe in Abruzzo. Full report coming soon.

2018 Dom. Lejeune Pommard 1er Cru Les Rugiens

New producer to me and my first ‘18 Pommard. Showed very well. Early maturity is clearly in evidence and feels like it can go on for a good while longer.

Because the Tour de France was in the Côte d’Or today.

Getting ready to grill some cow. 2012 Virage seemed appropriate. Really nice right now.

That’s a great bottle, and still has room to run. I’m going to miss those when they’re gone.

Haven‘t seen those names mentioned here. Two legit bottles.

I’ve seen a lot of mention of Andree elsewhere — how is it?

Domaine Labet - Assemblage 2018
95% Chardonnay 5% Savagnin. 14,5%

Straw yellow and relatively low viscosity — lively, and young.
Curry, coconut, and pear in the nose.
Coconut water, honey melon and acidity for days in the mouth — a friend of Comte. Hold for 5 years for it to mellow slightly, but otherwise a beautiful bottle. Love this cuvee so much — It’s on par with the Vin Jaune IMO.

Have the '17 of that Anjou on deck. Looking forward!

CASUAL WINES AT YANG MING - (6/7/2024)

  • 2020 L.A.S Vino Chardonnay Wildberry Springs - Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Margaret River
Guessed this as a South African Chenin, thought this was too ripe and tropical to be a Chardonnay. Good minerality, not too flabby despite its new-world nature. Well-judged oak use with notes of pear, and slight bruised apple. (90 pts.)
  • 2017 Sadie Family Palladius - South Africa, Coastal Region, Swartland, Malmesbury
Brought for a friend. Most guesses were in Jura or Loire which was understandable given the ripe (but still restrained) citrus and grapefruit notes. Oak was more prominent than the LAS Vino but still well-managed, it gave the wine a serious weight. Good to go now. (92 pts.)
  • 2010 Digioia-Royer Bourgogne RosĂŠ - France, Burgundy, Bourgogne
Colour was quite dark for a rose - almost like a red wine so reminded me of a Pepe, but palate was definitely not so couldn’t quite place this. Drank a little like a tart version of Ribena, more interesting from an intellectual perspective than anything else. (86 pts.)
  • 2018 Les Vins Pirouettes Pinot Noir le Brutal de RaphaĂŤl - France, Alsace
Obviously Alsace from the bottle shape but not as light-footed as I expected from the region. A dark, smoky Pinot more reminiscent of one of German origin. (87 pts.)
  • 2020 Idda Etna Rosso - Italy, Sicily, Etna DOC
Guessed aged Burgundy but when revealed to be Nerello (not the first time that I’ve been fooled), thought this had to be much younger than '00s that I was initially thinking of. Quite a smoky nose (more so than the Don Peppino the other day); more floral than the Alsace and reminded me of an elegant Gevrey. Glossy wine without much depth. (90 pts.)
  • 2017 Real Companhia Velha Douro Series Bastardo - Portugal, Douro
Another Burgundian wine but a contrast to the Etna that came before. More red-fruited but a little dense so guessed ‘18 Bugundy. Pleasurable and straightforward like the Etna but thought this had more depth. (91 pts.)
  • 2005 Louis Jadot Beaune 1er Cru Boucherottes Domaine des HĂŠritiers Louis Jadot - France, Burgundy, CĂ´te de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru
Another Burgundy guess, finally landed correctly - thought CdB but guessed Volnay. Quite developed and more approachable than I thought a Jadot ‘05 would be. Darker fruit than a usual Beaune but the tannins were not out of whack, acidity did stand out. Another pleasurable rather than intellectual wine. (90 pts.)
  • 1997 Marcarini Barolo Brunate - Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
My contribution. Opened two hours before dinner where it was incredibly tannic despite some bricking that reflected its age. Most guessed correctly as Nebbiolo from the ‘90s or early ‘00s at dinner. Some VA that didn’t ever quite go away, palate was slightly oxidised and tired with some balsamic notes, but had some embers of dark cherry fruit. (90 pts.)

My first Mexican wine! (Didn’t have a pic so borrowed this from CT)

  • 2022 Bruma Sauvignon Blanc Plan B - Mexico, Baja California, Valle de Guadalupe (7/6/2024)
Hey, this is actually pretty good! Good concentration, gooseberry and a bit of grass, juicy citrus, and decent mineral depth and tension. Some smoky reduction upfront as well. A touch of phenolic bitterness that is just slightly out of balance. 13.2% alc and no oak. Perhaps could have had a lighter touch on the pressing, but all in all a terrific effort that could hold its own in a tasting of entry level Sancerres. (89 points)

@Scott_Tallman and @Julian_Marshall would approve: introducing the “kid” to Cab Franc.

2021 Baudry Clos Guillot

2018 Domaine Guion Cuvee Deux Monts

Although the poor kid did have a 2005 Rougeard Les Pouyeaux in Dallas, when we had dinner with Kane and Todd. We put poor Nick under the table.

This is the way!!

Apparently premiere vintage. 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, but you only find this information online. Yet with telltale marks of CF typicity. The tannins are still harsh, with fine fruit peeking through. If I had more I would set them aside for a while.

Quincy and local fare in Finistère.

Domaine des Brosses Quincy 2022
Typical, very perfumed, good acidity, plenty of body, mineral finish. Worked with fresh seafood and fish a la plancha.

“New school” Burgundy.

Pop’n’pour:
I have never had such a crazy intense liquorice powder note in any wine before.

With some air:
Red cherries, fresh herbs and roses come more forward and balances the liquorice note more.

Not the most complex wine, and I don’t see it benefit much from more age. But it is delicious now and is one of those magic trick wines…

1, 2, 3 the glass is empty!

Thanks for that — did you try any other cuvees?
I’m having a hard time pulling the trigger with an increased price this year.
