What bottle of wine did you open today? (Part 2)

Amazing day in the PNW yesterday and celebrated fully. Most of our neighbors ended up stopping by for a glass. Kind of a perfect afternoon.

Living in the Southern Hemisphere is even more complicated than that!

The gurgler in our bathtub rotates in the opposite direction to yours.

And cool climate vineyards usually have a northerly aspect.

Weird I know

You need to check the flat earth thread to discover why what you just said is impossible.

after a careful and thorough scientific analysis, I have found that cats have disproved the existence of a flat earth

How was it? Ive got a couple 375’s, had no intention of drinking any time soon

With a once in a hundred year Aurora a delicious, seamless 2013 Antinori Pian Delle Vigne Brunello. Rich, without being heavy.

Come on, it’s flat on both sides, or is a one-dimensional flat earth?

The 2012 Dom was smokin, as usual. Lovin this vintage and its approachability. Lemon curds and toasty buttered croissant, with hints of petrol and matchstick on the nose. The 2013 Gerard Cote Rotie is brooding, still backward. Love the gamy, briny notes. Cured bacon. The 2012 Roc de Cambes was a funk bomb of pungent truffles and toasted garlic, a very unique nose. Classic Charvin, a really elegant 2020. Dang this 2005 GPL is a classic beauty. Gave it a 2-hour decant, still needs some years. Archetype Pauillac.

My family can drink…

was less dense and nuanced than the 2017, more floral and tropical than the 2005. My only other comparison was the 2015, which was much more everything. Overall, I’d say it was delicious (as one would expect) but needs more time to get some complexity on the palate. Plenty of acid to hold it together for a while. I’ve got 2 more and i’ll probably wait at least 4-5 years before I open the next one.

Just take a look at the colour of this 11 year old wine!. Mid to dark yellow. Mild oxidative nose but not completely premoxed. Drinkable but seriously advanced. Tastes like a 30-40 year old Riesling not one that is 11 years old. My horrible terrible run with Trimbach continues. God I hate tree bark as a closure. Luckily I only have one bottle of Trimbach left in the cellar so this continuing depressing high failure rate will soon be in the rear view mirror

That sucks. Don’t want to poke the bear but recent 07 was fresh as a trout!

Lovely little line up with a BBQ last night.

I really love the Esporoa reserva branco, this was the 2022, wonderfully fresh and a little creamy, perfect to start with on a hot day

The La Serena Rosso di Montalcino had been opened the night before and was improved for that, went nicely with a steak tataki.

The Jean-Louis Moissenet-bonnard Pommard Epenots has been a relevation - picked up half a dozen bottles on offer a few months ago and immediately took another 12 after tasting the first. Just lovely deep black cherry notes running through it.

Cantemerle is always my go to Bordeaux and the 2015 is really in a nice place at the moment and can just be popped and poured.

Irene Grünenfelder Pinot Noir Eichholz - one of my favourite Swiss pinot noir producers, not so easy to get hold off so whenever I get the chance on older vintages I pick it up. This was a 2013 and beautifully on song.

Great line up - albeit a little weird for you - La Fleur de Boüard??!! Wot!! Shurely sum misstake guvnor! I wouldn’t have had you down as a Labégorce man either actually - what were they like? Good to hear that the GPL is coming along fine.

My sister brought those two. I avoided the La Fleur de Blah but will admit to having a glass of that Labergooshy end of night as we enjoyed cigars. Then hit the Scotch. That Glenlevitt 18 is smooth like butter.

Ah, makes sense. Out of interest, did she prefer your wines or hers?!

My sister actually has a great old world palate, loves Chinon. I think she just popped into Total Wine and grabbed whatever she saw on the shelves that was reasonably priced and had decent points. I’m not sure she would know these are more modern style wines until she tasted them. The kids loved these wines, however.

Gunther Steinmetz Wintricher Geirslay Riesling GW 2019:

This is a wine that goes to 11. Every aspect of this wine is intense. The aromas don’t leap from the glass, they pole vault from it. My entire apartment was filled with the scent of ripe nectarines and flowers from the moment I pulled the cork. The palate is thick, oily and full of dramatic citrus flavors which reveal themselves in a kaleidoscopic manner. And then comes the mineral assault - an invasion of Normandy level saline attack. This is all delivered with a defibrillator like shock of acidity which powers a very long peacock tail finish.

This should drink well for many years. I’d give it a couple hours in the decanter if drinking now. I wish these weren’t so difficult to source. Fantastic wine!

So glad to hear that ROC de C is showing well. Those wines are never boring!

This is a beautiful wine. On the leaner, acidic part of the Chardonnay spectrum. Ample fruit, mostly citrus to my palate, and an enjoyable chalk/ mineral finish that slowly fades away. Non-existent or minimal oak, which is my preference in wine usually. This wine was a great companion to my turn in the chef’s hat and our meal of Shrimp Scampi over Linguini.
